I'm not aware of any source document or standard from the 1816 period that specifies the diameter of the sovereign. "The Royal Mint" by Ansell is a good starting point and it's worth a read.
In it he states "The diameter and consequent thickness of a coin are not determined by law, but by it's suitableness for the public to whom it is to be issued; consequentially the usual mode of arriving at the diameter of a coin is too make it of such a size that it will emit the most musical sound it is capable of."
Not bad eh, doesn't matter what diameter it is, so long as it sounds nice! 🤣

Nice 1988 Gold BU £5 Quintuple Sovereign (scarce portrait type)

Condition notes: Superb looking coin, with the scarce portrait only used for two years (1987 and 1988).

Box/COA: Yes, Box and Cert No.3319.

Price:  £2,095 £2,050 includes Royal Mail Special Delivery.
This is about a £800 lower than a new RM £5 proof Gold release – and in probably better condition!

    Item Location: UK

    Shipping destinations: UK only.

Payment Terms: Payment by bank transfer in GBP only.  As I don’t do internet banking, I will physically go into my local bank branch on the morning following the transfer in order to confirm the payment has come through. No returns.

Dispatch Time: I aim to post by lunchtime of the day following payment.

I have also just submitted an 1828 w/o tuft half sovereign to PCGS for grading. The date was double stamped with some falling away from the coin. I took a picture before I sent it but for the life of me I cannot find it. Will look again later and upload if I find it. Otherwise, will update when the grading results are back. Should be in around 20 working days as I sent with a batch for express service.
    Cheers.
    EDIT. Just found image!!!

Just an update. The person who bought this contacted me to ask for help with grading. I examined the coin and felt it was probably just about worth sending to PCGS.
PCGS have just released the grades on that submission and this is recognised as the Roman 1 variety and it was graded as AU50. I think that is a fair result.

Yes, the clash is there, also the die cracks too. They were clearly produced with the same die.

I have this 1861 half sovereign in hand (NGC graded). I wonder what everyone's thought on that 8:

I found one more example like this in PCGS holder.

I detest the 2012 it was horrific. I don't like the clip art 2005 one either. I also don't care for the 2002 sovereign, the lack of legends around the edges makes it look bland. It's like they wanted to replicate a Vicky shield sovereign but forgot half the design.

You have a good variety of different heads/monarchs already, so may be a good old Victorian shield back would fit into your collection nicely. Then Edward VII, Elizabeth II Gillick.....

My Pistrucci arrived yesterday, just the 2oz silver. Didn't have a chance to open until late last night. I wish I hadn't bothered. The worst coin I have received from the comedians at RM.
There is so much of the frosting missing it is laughable. I have highlighted the worst bits. The entire sword takes the cake though!
I don't want it in this state, but any chance of a replacement? Is it worth the hassle? I might just ask for a refund, I couldn't sell this duffer with a clear conscience, any thoughts/advice would be welcome.

You make a good point on the mintage numbers.
I see more Half Sovs from Sydney and Melbourne mints that have way lower mintages than I do 1859 Ansell’s.
Perhaps there was a re-melt of some of the 250k?
