  1. Looks very nice in the pictures, and in my opinion it doesn't look as if has been cleaned.  Hard to know sometimes until you have the coin in hand.

These coins are nice pieces of history; the last (easily affordable) early milled silver shilling.  One of these, and an 1816 new coinage George III shilling would make a nice pair of shillings in a collection.  Decent examples of both coins are quite easy to find for reasonable money, although neither coin is going to increase massively in value.  Just enjoy being their custodian for a while.

  2. That looks very nice - it's better than the one I have.  Mine is VF.

I recognise the website and the coin - the price is about right I would say, possibly a bit on the high side but it's a very decent coin and a really nice thing to have in hand.  They are quite common though.

  3. I have a spare 1849 as well.  It has a slight edge bruise and it may also have been lightly cleaned at some point.

Once again I bought this from a different reputable dealer about 7 years ago.  I have another one now that I will keep, so this one also needs a good home.

(Neither dealer specified that the coin may have been lightly cleaned, this is just what I think.  They are still nice coins.)

  4. 1872 is one of the easier years to find, so you should be able to get one in a decent grade for a lower cost than for some other years.

£100 for a VF example (UK grading) from a dealer is probably about right, possibly slightly over book price but not too much.  £100 is definitely too much for a Fine example.

I have an 1852 gothic florin which could potentially be for sale.  Grade wise I would say it's EF but has probably been lightly cleaned.  I bought it from a reputable dealer about 7 years ago, I now have two other gothic florins which I will keep.

Is there anything else you want? I'm putting together the order now to send out prices to everyone? 1 10oz capsule on its own probably wouldn't work out cheap

    Thanks for asking 😊

My coins are in Quadrums so I don't need any capsules for those at the moment.

Sadly for me, I only actually need 1 capsule for my 10 oz Una bar.  I can't easily find one of these, I've asked morezone and bitesizetrader fairly recently but neither of them has any for sale at the moment.

Does anyone else on the Forum need any capsules for 10 oz Royal Mint silver bullion bars?

  6. My first ever gig was Iron Maiden, back in 1984.  And I saw them at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1986 and caught one of Nicko McBrain's drumsticks.  I still have it, in my study.

    Apologies for the thread derailment.

Up until now I have mostly been a collector of specific modern bullion coins and bars, but I would stack bullion sovereigns and double sovereigns.  I have a few spares as part of my stack and will possibly look to add some more next year.  Thus far I have only bought the current year coins for my stack, new from reputable dealers.

  7. Well as a small head start, just looking at the still image (I haven't watched the video) you have some Victoria Gothic florins, a Victoria Jubilee Head shilling and half crown, a couple of Edward VII florins, a few threepences and sixpences, a crown that is likely to be Victoria, a George V half crown, a florin that is likely to be George V - etc.

Edit - and a George III Cartwheel Penny.

Check for rare dates - especially on the florins, but most of them will only be worth melt value in that condition.  Maybe a little more for the gothic florins, but you may have quite a tough job finding a buyer willing to pay much more.

This resource is helpful on rare dates.  In UK grading terms, most of those coins would not even be considered Fine so they aren't high grade at all.

  8. I like the BBC coin design, apart from the phrase "100 years of our BBC".  That just annoys me, in the same way as when the NHS is described as "our NHS".

It's trying to attribute endowment or ownership of these bodies to private individuals in an attempt to make those individuals value these institutions more (and therefore soften them up for tax or fee increases).  I am wise to that tactic, which is why I dislike the phrases.

  9. Another thumbs up for the Completer coin here.
It's really nice, and it also means that some people might just want to own the Completer coin and not actually own or collect the set of 10 individual Beasts.

I have four Completers in three metals and three different sizes.  Love them all!

I still get disgruntled by quintuple and double sovereigns. I still call them £5 and £2 coins. It still pisses me off that you have to specify what a British 'crown' is these days too. Is it a 5/- (25p) or a £5 coin? Then of course you get the gold version of the £5 crown... Arrghhh!

The same has happened with nobles and guineas.

I sort-of disagree with this, because there are £2 coins which are not double sovereigns.  Therefore I call double sovereigns 'double sovereigns', and any other coin with £2 denomination a £2 coin.

The same applies to quintuple sovereigns/five sovereign pieces.  I don't call these '£5 coins'.

Hey ho.  We all know what we mean and what we like!

  11. It might just be the case that it was an older coin graded ages ago when the TPG companies didn't faff about with cameo and ultra cameo designations.

This is one of the reasons why I'm not particularly interested in graded coins, but I appreciate that some people like them very much.  There's room for all of us in this hobby 🙂
