Managed to get everything in one place briefly last week. On the way back to the vaults though I nipped out on the boat and you'll never guess what happened.

More or less.  Stopped back in 2018 and only continued with the QBs.  Time for me to start building my SIPP and other investments.

Last year I wound everything down with the final purchases of the QBs gold bullions.  Then recently the QB completer came out so had to grab that as well and that should have been the end.  But...there was one coin which I should have picked up years ago but there was always something else to buy so I'd always put it off for another day.  Over the bank holiday weekend I decided to make one final purchase and here it is.  I already have the 2, 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 but just needed this to finish off the set. Unlike it's little brothers which are stored away and haven't been seen for years, this beast is going to be my fondling piece which will sit at my desk.  Hopefully the .900 alloy will hold up well otherwise it'll end up getting a bit dinged and scuffed.

This WEEK I received loads, my postman has been like a fairy tale dwarf miner delivering PM's on a daily basis. A 2oz perth mint dragon with 2 x 1oz tiger and dragon coins.
    A 1oz gold 2021 brit
A queens 95th birthday proof silver collaboration of the royal mint and Canadian mint. Bought in a fit of patriotism but disappointingly plain.
And lastly my favourite, a silver roman ring nearly 2000 years old. My imagination runs wild when I hold it, priceless.

They are still mainstream, and very useful.
Try buying your groceries with gold, silver, platinum, or a crypto currency. Theoretically it might be possible, but it might not be easy, and your choice might be restricted.
Although, for larger purchases, such as a car, you may not be able to pay in actual cash because of AML rules.
So, there is still use for Fiat Currency:

I'm glad people are stacking their coins with care!
I too would always prefer people to take resonable care of their coins.
Sure, an RM tube is probably the most efficient gold/sq.in but they rub!
400 ounce good delivery bars, or even kilo bars are more space efficient than coins in RM tubes, but not really as enjoyable unless you have enough of them.
When I see @LawrenceChard shuffling sovereigns in his hand, I cringe!!
I'm sorry if me shuffling sovereigns makes you cringe. I tend to only do it with circulated coins, and even then I try to minimise the relative movement between them. There is a trade-off between processing efficiency and handling damage.
Sure, they're only bullion and they're not 999 but it seems so wrong....I mean, they're £300 plus.
Yes, I keep forgetting they've gone up from £4
You wouldn't chuck your Snap-On tools in a toolbox, no, you'd put them back on the socket rail they came from!
    What's a socket rail? 🙂
On a serious note: I cringe at some of the treatment people give coins:
We quite often get proof sovereigns and proof sets, where the owners have had them all out of the capsules, got fingerprints and scratches on the coins, discarded the RM certificates, and chain-smoked so the boxes reek of smoke, and we have to "quarantine" them until the smell goes.
I remember collecting a large quantity (1000+) of sovereigns from an exclusive London address. The owners had bought them from us some years before, and paid extra for some new minty ones. When we arrived to collect them, we discovered they had let their kids use them as toys, so there were no longer any minty ones.
Another time, a chap bought a lot of modern proof gold from us over a few years, then some years later decided to sell them. He had taken the capsules out of the boxes so they could fit in his safe, but then let his grand-daughter sell many of them on ebay. the boxes he still had stank of tobacco smoke.
On a slight tangent, another thing which we find frustrating is when people bring us quite large "collections" of modern issues they have bought from one or more of the coin marketing companies. Often these are old people, usually not internet-savvy, and they have "invested" for their children, grand-children, etc, but never done any research until too late. It is quite common to hear that people have spent 6 figure amounts of money. One recent example must have cost about £600,000! We ended up paying him about 60% of that, but only because gold prices had gone up since he bought them. If he had bought bullion sovereigns, Britannias, or similar from us, he could have been getting over £1 million for them.
As it happens, there were many interesting coins, mainly because they were "new to us", but many of them are not highly sought after, and it requires considerable marketing effort to find good new homes for them. I suspect many dealers would have just bought them for scrap.

Thanks Roy. Luckily for me my cousin is a tax lawyer in NC so it’s all already sorted for payment when the property sells. Interestingly, largely the tax bill is paid in the UK under some agreement to only tax inheritance once. However there are sales taxes etc to be paid.

For me, initially the "storage ideas" were all ways to bulk up my stack and help motivate me. 25 sovs in and RM tube are quite underwhelming. Even 100 sovs looks a lot more substantial in the capsules and tubes than just 4 RM tubes. you have to use all tricks of the mind available to help push you forward! I love to have the entire collection in my boxes made by @alun but unfortunately I can't justify the SDB prices to store them. still hoping someone will develop a narrow box purpose built for SDB, a bit like the narrow watch boxes you see.

Old thread but though I’d share! Similar method to others!! I use lighthouse capsules for the sovs and air tite tubes. Can fit 17 per tube. Can’t remember how many 1 oz fit in a tube with the ringed capsules i use. The width of my safe deposit box is exactly right for the sov tubes which is very handy!

I think the market everywhere bar oBey the auctioneers has indicated a good enough guide for pricing silver for a while now. As a baseline indication I think something like 12:1 is a reasonable ballpark for 'normal' silver like Britannias and 'normal' gold like bullion sovereigns. That's as of right now whilst thinking about it, but that may change given a myriad of potential market changes. As with everything though there is nuance; not all silver carries the same premium and neither does all gold. A decent young head Victoria will likely not be 3% over for instance. If it was something I was looking to do I would work out what the going rate would be for each item I had when converted to £sterling, then look around at the kind of gold I would want in return and offer up an equal looking trade.  As a for example if you had eight Koalas that were trading for around the £30 mark each and three Britannias that were trading for around £28 each you could state that on the swap advert and ask for say, one average bullion condition sovereign. It would then be up to those viewing the advert whether to decide that trade is worthwhile for them or not. There may even be some bartering to be done, which is always fun!
Saying that silver owners overvalue their holdings when the evidence suggests that market value silver sells very well all the time on TSF alone is an odd point to make. Some adverts stick around for a while, but the majority of decently priced silver flies out of the trade section. It's a useful tool for judging the "real" value of silver at any given time.

Well that is the risk i take. Your situation sounds a bit different to mine.
i move across borders - moving silver is not easy since Brexit. You could end up paying taxes or getting it confiscated. With some of my silver in Kinesis i can move it without moving it. i can get it delivered wherever i want and i can sell it at the click of a mouse or spend it on a card. It makes sense to keep some of my silver in this format. i've worked with the people running this for several years - i have personally chatted to the CEO. i have bought - sold and taken the cash more than once. i agree holding it is good but for ALL your metal i don't think it is necessarily the best.

Nope, I happen to know he keeps it in a wrecked Man-of-war somewhere off the coast of Spain. It's rigged to detonate and sink should anyone board it, with his hoard protected within a cannon-proof safe constructed from an unknown metal of ancient origin.
