It was made made just for the USA market sadly and sold with even bigger premium. It did look rather nice.
There's also a 2oz gold matt proof, that's was sold the royal mint marque members, I was lucky to get at launch
Not very often RM issue matt proof

Hypothetically will it do better than 2 x 1oz bullion counterparts in ten years, I'd say no personally. I'd much rather have twice the amount gold in the hope of making a few pounds. With that being said, it can still become sought after but you need to buy stuff solely on what you will enjoy owning incase the value never goes up.
Build a foundation of bullion with a healthy quality to premium ratio first, then you can branch out into collecting if your still interested, you will have picked up more knowledge in what you like by then too.

50 years time probably going to be worth a lot! The design is very appealing and reminiscent of a much older style. Not one to sell early!

I also agree gold probably won't make anyone rich over night (if they have less than 30k for example) but it will protect us and could considerably boost our net worth (once every 10-20 years - during the right crisis).
However, I think that those positioned to afford more could make life changing amounts. An example is Rick Rule; he openly admits he is waiting for the 5-fold hike that comes around every decade or two over a short period. I imagine a person like Rick will have hundreds of thousands in gold - so if that happens - then it will make him very rich indeed.
We all have different views - not one view is 100% accurate - we can just go on our gut and research to the best of our abilities. One thing gold is; it is safe. Way safer than fiat currency losing value to inflation and safer than the unpredictability of speculative trading. Gold and houses are my favourite investments; physical, tangible assets that appreciate in value over a long time (houses generate passive income too).
I also think adding (reliable) index funds would work well too (however, I'm not touching the S&P until this rate cycle is over and rates have settled wherever they are going to settle - because historically, 90%+ of the time the rates drop, it results in a considerable recession (stocks drop, gold rockets - that's not speculation - it's a statistical fact - but never put all the eggs in that basket, as you have rightly said as there's never a guarantee). But gold and cash at the moment are my focus (because the economy is not healthy and interest rates are still really good for now).
Since the 1930s a dollar now buys 1 cent of goods. Gold still buys 100% of those goods. For me, the inflationary reason alone is enough to tell me all I need.

Gold really needs to see a £200 bump in GBP.   The US election is setting out to be one of the most craziest in modern history with states barring Trump from running not just one way traffic other states may bar Biden from running.   If we were ever gonna see the US eat itself alive 2024 is looking like the contender.

Yes, from 2009 the sovereign was issued without the streamer, but other coins in the series continued with it.  I think the reason for doing this was to make sure the sovereign was readily distinguishable from the half sovereign because in reality there is not that much difference in size, and in pictures it may not be that apparent.

It's easy to dismiss but as the older generation of collector moves on who is going to replace them? I do think the Harry potter coins were a very smart move in that direction, there are a lot of adults buying them for themselves. My girlfriend has no interest in coins but she had to have them and has now started collecting the new zealand mint fantastic beasts.
It may seem a bit vulgar or crass but they need new customers and that's how you get them, @GoldDiggerDave joked about gold pokemon  cards....i bet that if the mint were to actually do that, and do it properly they would sell like crazy. That actually ties in to your other point about they can't afford it, people are paying thousands, sometimes millions for those cards and you think they wouldn't buy a gold one as a flex?
What about other aspects of gamer culture? Look at the game streaming industry, it's creating a lot of rich young nerds who might greatly appreciate a video game character line, you could easily have done gaming icons like Mario, link, sonic etc. rather than myths and legends or another james bond tie in.
You know I'm starting to think I may be a marketing genius

A bit disappointed not to be selected to fill out a sovereign survey. I would have given the ‘yellow’ box a resounding YES! and I’m sure LC would have done the same, having campaigned for years for a change in the alloy. By the way it’s ’RED’ gold not ‘Rose’ that’s a Jewellery term!. Maybe it’s a term the RM will use as it ventures into the ‘886’ jewellery business 18ct gold etc?
Red gold has been used since about 1985 with the Maklouf proof sovereigns. Certainly the Gillicks and Machins look as if they were made with Yellow gold as did everything else before that. Perhaps the RM wanted to keep the Sovereigns as a separate entity, and to target different buyers/collectors, knowing that the new Britannias were being minted in 1987 mainly for bullion buyers, in competition with Krugerrands.

What is odd, is that in 1997 it included the new £2 bi-metal coin in the Sovereign set with a ‘Red’ gold outer ring, and ‘Yellow’ gold inner, (as described by the RM,)  instead of the normal ‘double sovereign’ So that shows the RM knows the difference between the two shades of gold!
Anyway, changing the alloy to Yellow gold would be my only wish……but will the RM take any notice of the survey?

They are running out of road and ideas.   There’s absolutely loads they could do to encourage collectors without decimating the sovereign (pun intended)
The Royal Mint as a business are seeing their Kodak moment coinage is practically worthless and obsolete, don’t even need to have an ashtray full of change in the car for the car park anymore.

They are directionless, just Wapping out one commemorative after another with decreasing sales figures no wonder they are not publishing their sales figures since 2019.
The frustration here the mint have a closed market not as if they really have any competition within the UK.
Id love to sit down with the decision makers at the RM……hell give me a job, as I could do it better than them.

I spent about an hour crafting my responses, and with all due respect to whoever reads them, I provided severe feedback and also cross questioned them about their line of thinking.
    - Security features
    - micro text
    - 12-sided coin
    - hidden latent image
    - edge lettering
    - more privy mark Sovereigns
    - ability to verify Sovereign’s authenticity using smartphone (HOW? By fiddling with the coin’s design? And also, WHY?)
    - wavy lines in the fields (like the Britannia)
    - recycled materials for coin and packaging
    - unique KC III portraits (again, FOR WHAT REASON?)
    - St. George and Dragon (vs alternate designs, I assume)
    - silver Sovereign (again, WHY?)

The only question worth posing imo was the yellow vs rose gold question (which got a YES for yellow from me). The question should never have been asked though, the choice should have been obvious; but probably some advisory committee thinks rose gold looks contemporary and pretty so “let’s ask our customers!”
I made it clear that in the Royal Mint’s own words, the Sovereign is supposed to be A CONSTANT THROUGH CHANGE!
I also gave my thoughts about the numerous variations: proof, bullion, BU matte / plain edge, SotD, privy marks, and that I’ve lost interest because the Sovereign’s rarity and uniqueness has been diluted.
It’s likely the survey was sent out to check a box, and the Royal Mint will do what they want in the end; but I’ll keep my fingers crossed they genuinely care about collectors’ opinions.

I wasn’t one of the "lucky" folks who received the survey email. I guess I need to spend more directly with the mint LOL. 😂
It’s quite worrying the questions being asked as I really don’t have any confidence in them actually acknowledging and placing any value in the feedback they will receive. I feel they will just crack on with what they deem “best for business”. The last 2 years they have milked several ranges and made the sovereign range less appealing for me anyway. I delayed my first baby steps into the proof market solely on the basis of such poor quality control from RM and the high number of non satisfied collectors. Not just on TSF.
I would prefer them to focus on quality control and revert the sovereign back to the yellow gold finish. The copper finish is just horrendous both on bullion and proofs. The potential changes in pricing structure for 2024 may not reflect the value and quality you will receive.
Also, I think I’m the only one here that hates the packaging? Is it a laminated wood finish? For the proof boxes? I find them tacky and reminds me of the cheap wallpaper you find in poundland.
No to silver version of the sovereign. We had enough of milked britannias. We don’t need milked silver sovereigns to match.

Yep, I'm not a massive soverign collector but I've got a few and I've been here long enough to know what it means to people.
I think that as the mint when you have dedicated collectors forums like this you would be crazy not to just come here, lurk and read, you would certainly save the time and expense of asking such stupid questions.
I think what this shows is that the management there are out of touch, do not care about the institution they are in charge of, have no interest in numismatics and they are desperately looking to see what they can get away with using the one coin they have that they believe is a guaranteed money spinner.

    Yes, I did.
Not interested in a silver sovereign.
Not interested in a 12 sided coin.
    Not interested in different purity.
    etc, etc.
Much prefer ‘old’ yellow gold to ‘new’ rose gold.
Comment: I won’t be buying any proof / SOTD sovereign until premiums come down significantly.

Oh dear, did anybody else get the mints soverign survey today?
Lots of questions about what 'innovations' you would like to see in future soverigns. Some of the suggestions were tags so you could see where they were made, security features, privy marks, whether you prefer rose gold, special monarch portraits and most bizarrely of all 12 sided coins.
Somebody in charge there really needs to be fired. You have a coin with a legacy of hundreds of years and they think the best thing they can do is change it! I do like the very occasional special soverign but it's the rarity of these that make them special.
Surely the whole point of a soverign is consistency and the fact its recognised worldwide. You start messing about with that and you ruin the legacy of what many would agree is the definitive coin of the royal mint.
All for a quick cash grab on the ever more pricey and ever less popular proof sets.

Sexy new coin but not sure what it really is.

    PROCLAMATION:
    For the obverse impression Our effigy with the inscription “· CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 10 POUNDS ·” and the date of the year,
and for the reverse a depiction of St George, armed, sitting on horseback, attacking a dragon with a sword, and a broken spear upon the ground with the inscription “HONI · SOIT · QUI · MAL · Y · PENSE”. The coin shall have a plain edge and in excuse letters the inscription “DECUS ET TUTAMEN · ANNO REGNI II ·”.’
    https://www.thegazette.co.uk/notice/4503115

    DENOMINATIONS:
    - Gold 5kg, 2kg, 1kg, 5oz, 2oz
    - Silver 1kg, 5oz, 2oz and 10oz piedfort

    MY COMMENTS:
Can’t be a Sovereign because of the specification of the denomination in the coins, their weights, and the variations in metal.
Also not sure if it is part of the Great Engravers series, because William Wyon’s St. George and the Dragon does not have the garter inscription (the circumscription is TREU UND FEST), nor does it have the edge inscription, as far as I know. The Garter design is by Benedetto Pistrucci (more below).
Finally, ANNO REGNI II means the Second Year of the Monarch’s Reign, meaning (to be very literal) September 2023 to August 2024 of King Charles’ reign.
Benedetto Pistrucci’s 1820 £2 pattern Sovereign does have an edge inscription of DECUS ET TUTAMEN • ANNO REGNI LX which was the 60th year of the Reign of King George III in 1820; however to complicate matters, this pattern coin does NOT have the Garter inscription. The 1819/19 Crown by Benedetto Pistrucci does have both the Garter and edge inscriptions.
So, my deduction is perhaps that this coin does after all continue the Great Engravers series (or maybe the Royal Mint finally caught on to my idea and is doing a series of St. George and the Dragon designs!), and they’ve combined the £1 Sovereign’s Garter design with the edge inscription from the £2 Sovereign to come up with a representative sample of Benedetto Pistrucci’s work.

why there is so little silver around at this time of year. Some silver is made into silver fulminate. This is a highly volatile explosive, just dropping a feather on it can cause it to explode. It is also what makes the crack in a Christmas cracker. So when you pull that cracker tomorrow, "bang" goes a piece of silver.
Have a great Christmas when it comes. Keep safe and enjoy. God bless.
