Gold purchases can be for a number of reasons, including and in no particular order , savings outside bank or other scrutiny and control, benefits arising from capital gains tax exemption and if bullion ease of liquidity, an interesting pastime where you can meet like minded individuals and in some instances take a major dislike too, the opportunity to lose money on RM proof issues that are becoming daily and general collecting amusement
am sure more sensible reasons exist but there’s a couple for you

Can see it happening opening one returned box and putting it into a post out box, To me to you.
QC is really bad, the only Proofs I have bought have been the Great Engravers, and every coin has had issues.

@BackyardBullion heard the latest? Their silent auction for these 23 BU 2023 sovereign sets is no longer silent. All losing bidders getting emailed to advise their bids are not high enough to win, all winning bidders emailed to advise they’re in a winning position but that they may wish to increase their bid as losing bids have been notified they will need to increase to win! Scummy tactics from RM

This is a really valid point that I'd somehow missed. They really are no longer any better than Westminster, Danbury, Tower, et all. And not a patch on the old Pobjoy. Government backed profiteering. Actually, none of the unofficial 'inferior' mints could get away with such shoddy work.
I once saw a collection of Westminster coins, all copper plated with gold and/or silver. Tacky? Yes. Poor quality? No. They were all "mint" (in what used to be the true meaning of the word).
Maybe these days when describing a used car as being in "mint condition" we ought to be describing the fact that it is dented, scratched, and has been quickly tarted up to achieve a vastly inflated price.

When I first started collecting I fell foul of the RM, canny salesperson quickly spotted I was a newbie. Subsequently I have some nice old coins in tidy packaging with an SOA and warnings never to open lest the sophisticated grading EF is contaminated.
The premium to comparative coins I’ve seen on TSF hurts like hell.
Caveat Emptor foff they are exploiting trust and debasing the institution.
Fortunately having laughed at subsequent attempts to fleece me with what’s best described as s*** they leave me alone.
I wish you all the best in your endeavours. I hope the recipient of your complaint can read.

I have bought 2 King George V silver coins from RM site when i started collecting numismatic coins years way back. After a year, i realized i can purchase similar grade ones at 50-60% from markets, a lesson learned and luckily not sky rocket prices were involved. These 2 coins are still kept by me up to now and remind me the story behind😅.

@Silverman2U @cjbcomm
I think it is important to draw a distiction between proofs and historic coins which is what this thread is primarily about.
Proof coins are expensive, would I like to see them cheaper, sure why not.
Can you buy them on the second hand market cheaper, yeah sometimes.
Historic coins however - these have a different feel to them on The Royal Mint's website. It feels like they have sourced them cheap and then slapped a massive price on to simply profiteer from people that don't know better.
That's part of why I am inititiating this "investigation" and getting some feedback from the mint.
I don't begrudge any company trying to make a profit. Taking a historic coin, checking it, authenticating it and then presenting it in a information sleave/box - sure thats fine and you can charge a premium for this for customers peace of mind. There is a market for this kind of product.
What I have a problem with is that The Royal Mint will use their reputation and branding to make people think a coin is valued at a certain level just because they say so.
Flagship of the world silver, 6x bulloin (poor condition if you see the photos) for £82.50 per oz is just a blatent rip off. £270 for a completely worn victoria young head crown...total rip off.
Price those at £40 per oz and £120 per crown then I would have no problem. They are still expensive but they are not extotinate.

It seems the Royal Mint are literally operating a pricing scam here.
They seem to be offering old coins at top premium, which could arguably be fair if the coin received was in extremely fine to mint condition.
To then send out coins that are of a condition no better than fair, extremely worn, is in my opinion, seriously misleading the buyer. This matters more if the buyer isn't really into coin collecting in a serious way, because when that individual does find out, it may put them off the hobby when they realise they've been stung by such a prominent seller as Royal Mint. I see this as "miss-selling a product" and quite literally, scamming the buyer.

Just catching up on this thread............ it's normal for coins to take a few weeks with some launches.....Good to see the 2oz silver is now looking like £420 ish it the new norm from dealers and auctions.
Still not seen a 5 or 10oz silver sell in the wild yet ....people who have them are not selling them they are waiting to see where the market takes them, especially with the 10oz silver as theres only 90. (don't know what the guide prices were for the 2 at COTR auction).........Those who passed might be kicking themselves in a fe weeks.
2oz golds are moving for 8.5k so the up ward trend is still there and we will not see any at the bigger auction houses until 4-6 weeks once they are in hand and then theres the first graded coins to market so the sales curves for these coin will not realise for 3 months +

Hard pass, not a fan even though I was born in the 80's.
Music legends will be worth less than RRP as I expect and you might as well buy bullion.
Highly recommended for the flippers to lose their money and hurt their bank accounts.
