If we have a crash the people that say they won't buy because it's too expensive still won't buy because the price drop will just spook them. We don't need a crash, leave the boom/bust cycles to crypto and stock speculators.

Bashing the Bishop won't make me rich either but that's not going to stop me.

Everything you wrote and especially this ˆˆ
These "Portrait sets" and "Branch mint sets" etc are particularly loathsome imo. I understand some telemarketeers / coin dealers whack up such compilations for milking the unwary, but from the RM it's just taking the low road to elderly abuse.

apachebleu reacted to Shinus73 in Investigation into Historic Coin Pricing by The Royal Mint
Very simply, the overpricing of historic coins and ‘sets’ by the RM in recent times is immoral.
It replicates the worst behaviour of the Sunday Magazine rip off companies, but is worse coming from a trusted organisation with unique and privileged access to the back catalogue of British coins.

apachebleu got a reaction from Chrisplym in The Tudor Dragon Cometh in Bullion
I'd say the dragon is the worst in the series because I think they tried to make it fierce and that doesn't work within the confines of the design. To me it should have been goofy and weird/fun.
I think with the decision to basically have the same body on every beast they made a real mistake and left very little room for a designer to do much (though they could still have done better)
Still, I'm committed to the gold bullion and reverse proofs.

Still, I suppose they are doing us a service reminding us all why we love the queens beasts so much.
It's fine, I'm still going to buy it, I'm enjoying collecting a set, keeps me buying bullion regularly and topping up the stack and it's more interesting than a brittania.

I'm the opposite, I have and I'm not sure what possessed me
Just messing, I actually quite like these, they are a bit c**p but also a bit of a laugh. Certainly I don't regret buying the gold bullion, why not? bullion is bullion.
Unless something odd happens I can't see the proofs being worth much but i do think they are quite cool and I will finish the set.

So...just saw this on Facebook. The mint were posting about the launch of the dragon and were asked about the bullion Panther. The representative said there will not be one, when asked to clarify they confirmed no bullion Panther.
This surely must be a mistake, who on earth would think that's a good idea? If, as I assume, it's a mistake then who the hell handles their social media advertising? That's a big **** up

apachebleu got a reaction from Bixley in British Monarchs Series - They Couldn’t, Could They?
It would be ridiculous if this were cancelled and it would kill confidence in signing up for future collections.
That said I always felt this collection was overambitious. Too big an investment over too long a period and good luck if you want that many graded...Criticism of the execution aside though I think this range was a great idea for the die hard collectors, real history and some great designs (some...).
These were never going to be coins worth money as an investment I don't think and with so many it would be damn near impossible to get top grading on everything so I expect that limited the appeal.
I maintain these should have been released as sovereign size bullion and everyone would be collecting them

You would be surprised that many people who work in this industry especially those at the front of of the business have zero interest in coins, know nothing about the industry and don't care about the people buying the coins. I'm not singling anyone or any dealer or business. It's just my experience I've found.
It's impossible to know every fact and details about coins but you would have thought some people would at least do their homework or have some idea about the coins they are selling.
Also these people I mention they are clues about the people buying coins they are all just "coin collectors" which has a tweed jacket nerdy connotation and they see their customers as such......Yes we look like complaining, fact checking nerds to most of them.
Theres so many different people buying coins for vastly different reasons, and It's really not that hard to speak to customers show a genuine interest in them get to know them and build some meaningful relationships most dealers struggle with this they just have a web site and just want their customers to click a button and the item turns up 2-3 days later without ever speaking to anyone.
Don't get me wrong theres also some very good people in this industry who are extremely knowledgeable but surprisingly they are the owners or someone who has a steak in the industry and not someone turning up for £9 per hour.

Actual hammered coins would have been an amazing thing. Each one completely unique... I also don't think there could have been any quibbles about quality 🤣

apachebleu reacted to westminstrel in British Monarchs Series - They Couldn’t, Could They?
I had said at the very beginning that a 1/4 oz gold (bullion or proof) would have been the perfect denomination in terms of price and long term feasibility of collecting and storing a 26-coin series.
The larger sizes just don’t make sense in those terms (cost and storage), nor are they really needed because portraits typically don’t have the level of intricate detail that need larger surface areas to be appreciated.

Not for the reverse proof sets. The first one was actually a stand alone launch a good few weeks after all the other proofs
If it looks better in hand or just grows on me I wouldn't be surprised
