RM is as guilty as any British company of milking the "general inflation" trend. Raising prices steeply even in the face of a stagnant underlying bullion price is short term profit maximisation, pure and simple. This general corporate attitude to pricing makes me sick. It remains to be seen if the marketing clowns at RM "get" the damage they have inflicted on the serious collector market long term by their pricing and issue policies recently.
It's going to take quite a while for recent proof sovereigns to clear their RRPs. Surely there are easier ways to make money in the numismatic market, even at today's price levels.

My view, having tried to collect the very best Gillicks possible is no.
It is possible to obtain very nice Gillicks without buying graded. The very best I have bought were from a main dealer (1959’s) that were n vvv condition.
Personally, I don’t buy graded coins.

as said before, Gillicks were never meant to circulate, and they are normally found in Mint State.
In my opnion, once this top pop bubble/mania will be over, many will cry holding an overpaid bullion (i see crazy ms67 going for 1500 gbp) which will hold a little numismatic premium.
Millions were minted... and as more and more go for the certification, i guess there will be more and more iper super ultra top, meaning that prices will drop

MS-63 to MS-64 Gillicks are pretty common, as Gillicks were never circulated as currency.  Therefore, graded ones in these grades are fairly common, and don't attract a large premium.  Grading Gillicks in this condition is likely to be fairly marginal in terms of increase in value; you might or might not get the cost of grading the coins back.  It's mostly down to rarity.  Coins that are rare in the grade will attract a higher premium.  There are, for example, Victorian-era sovereigns where the best grade on any example is perhaps MS-62 or something like that.  In this case, an example graded MS-62 will go for a premium.  I think for most Gillicks, the highest grades are about MS-66, and you're really looking at MS-65 or so to see a significant premium.  The grading company web sites have statistics for this, and you can look at auction histories to get some other stats.

    Just went through this thread.
It looks to me like a sophisticated fraud against ebay (or their insurers).
If the seller is not vigilant enough he gets shafted, otherwise ebay intervenes and he avoids material damage.
Either way 'buyer' profits to the tune of the cost of goods. Looks like a good example of the 'victimless' crime variety.
I suspect they fraudsters keep the purchase value within an optimal range: not too low to keep transaction numbers minimal, but not too high either or risk serious criminal investigations. Juuuuuust right.
Thanks for posting the whole saga.

Give what you can to the police. However, They are more likely to say that it's a civil matter and that the issue has been resolved by ebay. In this mental world though I'd not hold out much hope with the police. Usually they think their job has been done if the issue a crime number for insurance. You may find them coming after you for harassment. Only because your in front of them and the easy target. Not wanting to p!$$ on anyone's parade but unless they've committed hate speech against you, nowaday's you've got no chance with the police.

Great news mate. But I'd still fully chase this up with the police. It's fraud at the end of the day, and guaranteed this absolute c*nt will be doing it to someone else who may not have the good fortune of a friendly local Postie to back up their side of story.

From what I can see looking at coins coming up for sale all modern releases are suffering to some degree. I think this makes sense in the context of the current economic climate. There's still money out there but instead of betting on what were likely always overhyped (not to mention overpriced) new releases people are almost certainly opting for safer bets. Its possible that the prices these coins are selling at currently could make them a bargain in the future but thats definitely not guarantteed. A lot of folks like to compare these special release sovs to previous ones - especially the 89 ones. I'd warn about that mindset especially given the rate at which the Royal Mint has churned out special release sovs. At some point they stop being special and I wouldn't be surprised if we're there.

Some will have bought them with the intention of holding but have had things unexpected come up and need cash. Some will have bought to resell and just don't have enough cash flow to hold onto them hoping they rise in value - better to cash out, take the loss but have the chance to use that cash to profit elsewhere.

I wouldnt be shocked, why not? Is it any different to silver? Obviously I'd be dead against it but I reckon it would be easy for a govt and probably popular...I mean it only affects a bunch of rich people that don't need the money, well at least as far as a lot of people probably see it.
Easy headline and cash grab, never mind the reality most on here are just average people who choose to have a hobby that involves saving money rather than spending.

OK. So not a bad price after all. In fact, could be a real bargain in a few years' time.

There is VAT on the 6% buyer’s premium so in effect it is a 7.2% buyer’s premium. So this makes the purchase price £562.80. Also, you have postage on top. I can’t remember their minimum postage charge but if it is £10 then this would take the total cost to £572.80.

I just feel that most of the European deals are no longer of interest to people in the UK since brexit/VAT.

BBP had a small restock of some of those proof coins. He did also pick up the bullion 1/4oz Cypher Coronation coin as well though "to make sure it wasn’t lonely for the postal journey".
