Hi as you're new I will try and explain the workings of the forum. You know you have purchased when seller either responds on the sales thread to say it's yours, or sends a private message with payment instructions. Buyer's can either comment on the sales thread or by private message ( their own preference) to show interest,the seller will respond based on timestamps. unfortunately on this occasion the actual buyer piped you to the post by pm-ing first, before your comment. 

To suggest otherwise, or imply the seller was backing out due to spot price is both harsh and incorrect, they have a successful trade history and have nothing to gain by choosing one member over another. I appreciate you missed out on a bargain, but I can assure you more will pop up regularly. 

Best piece of advice I can give is to take your time.... look around and see how the forum actually works before jumping in with size 13s on. It's a very successful place that's built on trust and integrity, the last thing you want to do is create a negative view of yourself before your journey even begins. If unsure of anything or ever need direction/ advice, just ask and I will try my best to answer or point you in the direction of someone in the know.

Its not purchasing a 1 oz Britannia that is the problem. Its the principle that I agreed to purchase the Britannia on a public forum that was then declined. This makes a mockery of the whole process, you could pull out the PM card whenever you felt uncomfortable or a better deal was available. Should spot have fallen through the roof, I would have to stand to my purchase.

It is a fact that some items sell by private message rather than in the public listings.  I have seen this happen on a number of occasions and it is often the case where someone is pipped at the post via pm, and quite literally by a few seconds. It is nothing to be upset about and I am sure there has been no negative bias intended towards you in this instance. Such things do not happen as a rule on the forum. There will be other deals on offer soon enough if you just keep your eye on the listings.  I hope this helps.

@RDHC - you have no need to explain yourself from what I can see “First come, first serve”. you are fully within your right to sell and not encounter this behaviour.

@bintarong - Everyone here is civil and speaks to each other with respect rather than lash out.. from what I can see you posted to express interest in purchasing… you shouldn’t conclude that the item is yours until the seller has confirmed. 
 

P.S Many many deals are completed via DM’s as the guys said above, this is for anonymity on a daily basis. 

You will get an opportunity to purchase again, no panic

I think the fact one can readily purchase great pm pieces at/near spot at all, makes this a great platform indeed, irrespective of the process through which contact is made to the seller. You kind of take your chances to a degree.

If I really like something I'll ping in the thread and follow up with a PM immediately. I imagine different expectations of securing the brit from seller and buyer on this occasion.

This post has been active all weekend, with RDHC bumping multiple times. When you get the sense your ad is not picking up much traffic, vigilance drops and you pick up messages/peak in the thread as they appear. I imagine RDHC got an email alert to the personal message and followed that up first as opposed to going on site and checking the thread perhaps. 

Who knows. More bargain brits to come and perhaps one you may prefer 🙂💖

I noticed this problem some time back. A simple yes please on the thread ends any arguments.. First come first served.  I much prefer this method of selling as stops any accusations of foul play. To have 3 or 4 pms and people also replying on the thread at the same time can be a nightmare.

And you are absolutely right about the email alert, which was what I picked up first (because I always go to my emails if I have been absent from home, as I was for one or two hours this afternoon, and then I went my other favoured web sites, including of course TSF, but I also check very frequently one or two newspaper sites to which I subscribe for important world or national news. I imagine that this is a fairly normal procedure or set of priorities for many members of TSF, who have an intelligent interest in many matters as well as this forum.

Moreover, the member who sent me a PM was, in point of time, ahead of the aggrieved member who responded to my listing on TSF, irrespective of my happening to look in on the forum after checking my emails.

I well recall that I lost out on a desirable shield sovereign in a Coins of the Realm auction about two years ago when my bid registered apparently successfully, only for it to transpire that someone else had pipped me by a nano second with exactly the same bid of £xxx, so I lost, and queried it, but I still lost. That's the electronic age for you.

From a personal perspective (I am much more of a buyer than a seller here), I agree that it would be 'nice' if sales threads were conducted entirely openly.  There have been countless occasions that I have offered to buy an item only to be told that it has already been sold.  It is very frustrating.

However, two points here as to why life isn't like that:

1. The seller is entirely within their rights to conduct their sale however they see fit, within the rules of the forum, and that includes selling items on private messages, other platforms, or to whoever else they want to.  They do not need to stick to any timing rules, social niceties or any other conventions that you may wish, although the vast majority do.
2. Some people do prefer to buy things anonymously.  A 1oz gold coin may be a trivial amount to some, but to others it is a large chunk of their disposable income, and to even more it is entirely beyond their means.  And there are numerous other reasons someone may wish to make a purchase on here without informing everyone else.

I am very sorry if this is frustrating, and on this occasion has lead to you missing out on a bargain, but this is how the forum works.

To @bintarong, and anyone else on the forum, please be respectful.  If you have a genuine grievance, or simply don't understand something, your first action should be to PM the seller.  If that is not satisfactory, then I suggest contacting one of the moderators or any longstanding member you trust.  Openly accusing someone of underhand behaviour, especially without firm evidence, is not going to lead to a positive outcome for you.

This has been a contentious issue one which I can see both sides.

It has been debated before and the seller has no option but to go by the time stamp to keep things fair to all.

I have also been unfortunate not to get items both by reply by pm only to be beaten to it and reply in listing only to be beaten by pm, whilst it is frustrating it is a factor of using the forum one that we all accept.

@RDHC is a highly respected member of the highest integrity and has to be applauded for offering great items at great prices and had no option other than to take the 1st bid in whether by pm or public listing.

@bintarong I fully understand your frustration but unfortunately unless stated in the listing we all have to accept that we can be beaten by either pm or public offer of intention. In this case it is an unfortunate case of timing not intended with any malice.

There will be other great deals there always is on the forum and I look forward to trying to beat all members to them 😄 🤣

Evening sir, it’s always been first come,  first serve. Sadly if you do not get the item, you could always ask to be the fall back incase a deal falls through…

Many of us have missed out on great deals, the exact same as this.. we all just move on and wait till the next opportunity arises.

Hi James32. quite strange that you know my shoes size lol. Thanks for working to my limitations regards TSF. I also appreciate you taking the time to explain the intimate workings of TSF, it personally means a lot to me.

Fyi.. I have previously purchased from different professional forum members before e.g theman73 with no issues. I naively decided to become a “silver member” a few days ago based on positive and professional interactions with other TSF members. This is the first time I have used the “Silver Member” privilege to do a deal early. As the arse fell out of this deal, I found this strong meat to swallow, and it left me somewhat confused. I can only profusely apologise to all TSF members who have tried to correct my error regards the purchasing process.

Before we all lose the will to live through exhaustion brought on by this protracted debate - and I apologise to all concerned for having been the unwitting cause of it - could we perhaps all agree that the plaintiff is in the unfortunate position of having 'a grievance without a remedy', as one senior judge once termed it,  and that sympathise as we may, nothing can be done about this and that the whole case should now lapse? (I write those words without being a trained lawyer, but as one who has been in a similar position and therefore obliged to acquire a degree of legal knowledge and parlance. My losses were much greater than the putative ones of the current plaintiff. For me it meant the premature end of my employment and all that that entailed.)

Good evening RDHC, apologies accepted...... What does the above message even mean....Please can you translate, as I am sensing elements of self harm. There is no need to go to such extremities for a 2017 Brit at spot. I profusely apologised in my previous message to James and I hope you can find it in your heart to accept this.... I now understand whatever is offered in public domain forum is to be ignored and taken with a pinch of salt until the seller confirms at their leisure that you are in fact the ultimate purchaser of their items for sale.
