Gold Premiums

I thought I'd start a new thread so people didn't think I was talking about them specifically!

Aren't premiums high at the moment?

Dealers selling Sovereigns @ nearly 10% and Britannias @ 20%? (in my head!).

Very lttle supply it seems at the moment, I doubt the dealers are getting much stock in nor selling much at those premiums.

I've been waiting for some bullion sovs from my favourite dealer for weeks now.

Where do you feel they should be at?

I’m new to the game, were premiums about similar when spot was last at a similar price?

Premiums will always be a hot topic I think. While there is demand, prices will follow the trend.

I agree silver premiums are crazy at moment but the vat @ 20% is not helping.

I like the kruggs as a 1oz bullion coin are my favs but the fractional versions dont really do it for me I think sovs are a great fractional coin.

3% for bullion sovs 😊

I bought some of the QE2 2023 Brits 'cos they are an interesting coin. I didn't think about the price, but when I looked earlier to buy some more, I was surprised to see the premiums. 20% for little Brits!

There's that word "should" again😉

Ha, yeah. Well that’s what it all comes down to, how much value we all individually place on items.

I’m interested in getting a feel of what premium people feel is, well, ‘about right’. I’m talking bullion in decent condition , nothing rare or proof.

Just before Christmas I was talking to several dealers, one large dealer told me for the purchase I wanted to make in sovereigns, they said they wouldn't be able to fill that order for upto 10 months. Supply is quite short on the sovereigns. I know the dealers are having to offer over spot in some instances to try to fill the demand. Make me feel as if spot should be higher.

There have always been high premium bullion coins, but usually with reason.

e.g.

Libertads

Pandas

Somalia Elephants

Buffalos

but you buy these because you like them, not because it makes sense!

When I started collection about 10 or so years ago. Sovereigns were about 2%, 2 1/2% over spot. Chards are 4 plus on their best price sovereign but they haven't got them in stock.

Yeah I does seem interesting, wondering if lots got melted down from the old " we buy your gold" stools that popped up in shopping centres a few years ago. As you say 3/5% feels about right to me but hey I know I have also spent more than that so I'm my own contradiction 😅

The high premiums ire putting me off buying, although to be fair I was planning on buying maybe only two or three sovs this year anyway and I'm waiting for the new ones with Charles' head on them to be issued.

Are the shortages being caused by rogue countries and banks hoovering up the gold all over the world or can we just blame it all on @James32 and his infamous outsized hoover...?

You are spot on, but it is a bit of an inconsistent landscape.

There is a Krug for sale on here that hasn’t sold for spot, but Brits and Sovs fly.

I am mostly interested in the Shield Sovs and the premiums at the lower to mid end have all ramped significantly over the last 18 months or so.

Maybe it is the CGT coins that have the higher premiums?

The value of your investment could go up or down … there seems to be too much certainty that return on investment will be a tax concern … losing the opportunity to offset losses in a well balanced portfolio may not be good either.

Where, where is the Krug for spot?

As folks have said CGT reducing to £3k is possibly a factor. Only need a few ounce of gold to increase in value by a decent % and you are on the hook.
