Looking for a brand new 50g bar

Recommended Posts

Looking to scale up and sell off my

little pieces at some point but I want to purchase a 50gram bar.

Below is a link from Sharps. Are they reputable ? If I was to purchase this bar would you think I made a good decision on this particular bar? No defects or downsides to it? Also I do not want to purchase lower amounts , 50gram a is what I’m looking for.

It looks a bit dull and boring though, not at all aesthetically pleasing !

But it's whatever floats your boat.

Sharps Pixley is an established bullion dealer in London. I have purchased from them and did not have a problem.

I like the cast bars. Baird quite nice.

I've not bought from Sharps but they are a genuine outfit many members have purchased from there.

The downsides to bars vs say Britannias or Sovereigns, they are not exempt from CGT which may or may not be an issue when you sell anyhow.

You can call a few dealers and ask what they pay for 50g gold bars compared to sovs or brits. (eg spot or 99% or 98% or whatever.

Otherwise it might become more difficult to post the 50g bar if gold price increase much more as SD covers to £2500. Dealers are equipped for this but might just be another minor inconvenience should you decide to sell.

I've heard it from a couple of dealers they prefer equivalent value in sovs than bars as they just more popular but I doubt there are any established dealers who wouldn't buy a 50g bar

Are you going for a cast bar, or a minted bar?

Cast bars are cheaper, but less attractive, minted bars are more expensive, but more attractive - as a crash course overview.

Check with @vicamy first as they have/had one for sale recently.

I like to buy the pre-dip dip

If you really want a 50g lump of gold then it's as good as any. Likewise with Sharps Pixley as a dealer.

As has already been mentioned, there are some downsides, but I presume you are well aware of these.

I would say though, that if you gave every member of this forum 2.5k to spend on gold I don't think many would buy that particular (or indeed any) gold bar. Myself included.

But it's your money and the heart wants what the heart wants. How to spend 2.5k isn't a bad problem to have...

As a UK bullion fan 😉, personally if I was in your position I would pay a little bit extra for the 50g Britannia bar over the Sharps Pixley bar (which is perfectly nice, but not as nice as the Britannia one in my opinion and it's also the official product of the Royal Mint).

I don't have any 50g bars, but here's a picture of some 1 oz minted bars from the Royal Mint in gold, silver and platinum.  I like them all, the gold ones in particular are very nice - because they are thin, the surface area is more impressive than I was expecting (think Philharmonikers versus Kangaroos!)

Any particular reason you want a brand new one?

Secondary market should be just as good:

Sharps are OK. Although they don't show you the % premium to make it easy like some dealers do (well, one dealer anyway) 😎

As some other members have said, what about a coin instead of a bar, 2.1% premium as opposed to 3.4%
