Next special edition Sovereign year?

I thought it would be interesting to see when members thought the next special edition sovereign could possibly be,

I’m a new collector so not as clues up as most but are there any key anniversary dates coming up in the near future that could result in one. Any predictions...?

Cheers

100 years since Bloody Sunday?

Or 100 years from the births of Tommy Cooper and Sir Harry Secombe! That's better 😄

I think most Sovereign enthusiasts are looking forward to an absence of a special or anniversary editions.

I'm betting that 2022 will see a special design reverse for the jubilee along with a SOTD, piedfort etc.

Who knows what anniversary they'll dream up for the rest of this year and 2021 for SOTD ? There's bound to be a royal family birthday in there somewhere.

I love it when the Royal Mint does something different with sovereigns when anniversaries come around. My own personal favourites are the five “Special Reverses” - 1989, 2002, 2005, 2012 and 2017 - which feature different sovereign designs. However, I just stuck to three of the bullion versions of the Special Reverses rather than the proofs. I don’t want to overdo it.

Nothing new for the sovereign next year, I think.

Other anniversaries that almost certainly will be put into a coin are the 150th anniversary of The Royal Albert Hall and the 125th anniversary of The National Trust.

And maybe 150th anniversary of The British Open (golf).

Definitely a 2022 special reverse, assuming Her Maj makes it to her Platinum Jubilee.  Hopefully no other ones for a good while otherwise.

I imagine that there will also be some different platinum coins offered in 2022 to mark the jubilee, but these won't be sovereigns.

Sadly said but if HRH The Queen won’t make it to her jubilee, that too could be a special edition.

I know that the Queen will make it to the last Queen’s Beast, the White Greyhound of Richmond, that comes out in September. However, it’s impossible for me to speculate about special issues beyond that date which is why I’m not scouting around for any.

I like them these special reverses too and its interesting to see this isn't the views of all with some wishing they would stop releases. I guess this is because enthusiasts feel they are a bit of a gimmick maybe?

Only thing I can think of is the coronation of George IVth.

The special year design proof sovs are very popular with collectors and more expensive than the traditional George and Dragon design sovs on the secondary market as a rule. We've only had 5 of them since 1989, although several more could be heading our way between 2022 and possibly 2026 when the Queen would reach her 100th birthday, all being well.

The ones I think are gimmicky are the sovs with the tiny privy marks on (quite prevalent recently) and the strike on the day sovs. Yet other collectors avidly collect these. We're all individuals with varying tastes and different budgets, however, I'd be surprised if any of us wanted a stop on the special designs. We just need to keep them special by having them released infrequently.

What about for the platinum Jubilee they release a set of 5 full sovereigns with the portraits of the queen through the years, that would be pretty cool no?

A 2022 dated proof sovereign with the Mary Gillick portrait especially
