Finally got my hands on this 1/2 ounce Pyx Gold Standard. I was expecting the coin to look a bit of a mess but I'm pleasantly surprised!

I braved hill and dale to get this weekend's gold n' silver hoard. I fought pirates off the coast of Africa and slayed dragons from the depths of middle Earth. Nope. Internet. 🤗 In the modern world all I had to do was wait for the postman but I did lose a slipper on the way so there was an element of some danger getting this weekend's treasure haul.
A shiny silver n' gold Christmas tree. At the base we have Queenie, gone but not forgotten coz she made for a far prettier coin than Charlie ever will, followed by our reining Monarch, x 2.
And at the top of the tree we have the ubiquitous half sovereign, shining like a pretty little candle adding wealth and beauty to any stack, no matter how small.

Besides, it wouldnt feel right if I don't post about it! 🙃

Antwerpstacker reacted to Ashtonian in 1872 Half Sovereign Fake or Rare?
Sorry for not posting sooner. What you have  is a normal legend 1872 half sovereign with a die number of 103, this means the nose of Victoria points to letter O in Victoria and the reverse has 147 denticles which was the norm from 1872 to 1880. There also exists a quite different 1872  half sovereign with the repositioned legend which also bears the same die number 103 but comes from completely different dies,  this has an obverse where the nose of Victoria points to T,  and a reverse that has far fewer denticles 122. One of the RL coins was recently sold at Canterbury Auction Galleries. but yours is the first NL coin I have seen so far with the 103. With the 105 die number, again there are two versions of the same coin, RL and NL versions. which use the same die number but are come from different dies.
The Royal Mint report for 1872 shows that 402 reverse dies where used, as of today I have only recorded approximately just over half  this number.

I know the 'where it all started' thing has been done to death, but it's interesting to see how we all got into this game.
My PM journey began in 2015, better late than never!
My first silver purchase was these 3 from Atkinson's. I couldn't ever sell them...

And this is what they cost me.

As soon as I saw them in the flesh and held them I was hooked, and have been ever since.
Nearly a decade down the line, hundreds of ounces later, yellow stuff in a deposit box, date runs completed, long term plans still being worked on, a few losses, a few wins, I still love it as much as I did in 2015!
That is in no small part due to this forum and everyone who makes it what it is.

Hallo, ich habe vor kurzem diese wunderschönen Stücke erhalten. Ich mag diese Dinger von Monarch Precious Metals in den USA. Das Gehäuse ist im Wikinger-Stil aus Eichenholz gefertigt. 5oz and 2oz silver, always a pleasure. Grüße von Maxe. 🥂

It’s an unmilled proof sovereign in everything but name.  It’s was minted as a proof many of the COA stated proof coin and some slipped though the net and were graded as PR not MS,  ( I’ve got the original letter from the RM recalling the COA)
also theres no privy mark so for me makes it a very unique  SOTD sovereign.   All other SOTD coins that came after in 2019 were all Matt .

    Maples from @kennyruss72
Then a trip to the local coin shop for a few bits and bobs. Shame about the cleaning on the 1905 Rupee, but I liked it.
Really really happy with the 2017 Little Brown bat, a few other silvers and a few harder to come by pennies.

Some Christmas gold arrivals. Was tempted with a number of raw 2017 50th anniversary Krugerrand's but then saw how many were hitting PF69 when graded, so this PF70 didn't cost much more than a raw with an added bonus there are only 16 graded @ 70 with NGC. Whereas the 2013 1/20 gold proof Brit has a 1000+ @ PF70.

Great to see US pre33 on the forum again. Congrats on your beautiful coins (in lovely condition too). The Indian eagles, containing 0.483 ounces of gold, are especially nice to ‘hold in the hand’. A real ‘Goldilocks’ coin.
The Indian half (and quarter!) eagles must be some of the nicest coins ever minted, the sunken design giving them a great three dimensional feel.
Ever since Theodore Roosevelt went on a mission to replace the Liberty coinage, the Liberty double eagle (1849-1907) has been much disparaged. Apparently he said:
I think our coinage is artistically of atrocious hideousness
Personally I think the $20 is a beautiful coin and your 1894 double eagle is a lovely example.
Here’s a photo of my 1914S $10. It has a richness and lustre above and beyond any of my other Indian eagles.
If you are interested you can view my collection of Indian Eagles on the NGC Registry where it is ranked number 73 out of 425 collections.

    1864 and 1865 London shields, another 1866 20 francs and an 1881 20 lire.
Always enjoy the shield design no matter which country that is. These coins come from approximately the same era, yet (tragically) you see very different trajectories these countries were on. 4 years later the frail Napoleon III would suffer a humiliating defeat by Prussia, and Paris again was ravaged by the most evil regime in the history of France. The once-proud kingdom was to be discontinued over the obscure insistence of replacing the tricolore with fleur-de-lis. Italy, on the other hand, was betrayed by the Greman-supporting and later communist infested north in 1946.
