AppleZippoandMetronome reacted to AndrewSL76 in Monsmoy - sad news
    Dear all,
With some sadness I write to confirm that monsmoy died recently. It was an unexpected death and I am beyond sure he will be a great miss to everyone.
He was the perfect gentleman and had a real eye for beautiful coins. His collection is a thing of beauty and will no doubt provide for his family as he wanted.
In order to give the family some privacy I am not posting specific details, but I am considering a small auction to raise money for a charity in his name. More to follow on that.
In the meantime, his wife will be looking to reset the password here in order to make sure that all pending deals are satisfactorily completed. If you do have any outstanding business please message him. If it helps, I am happy to take messages and share them directly.
As a last point, I thought I would repost one of his helpful messages. He always had time even when he was learning himself, and this message reflects that:

“The whole discussion regarding collecting, stacking and liquidity is interesting and there will be differing views.  I, too, am relatively new to the the world of physical PM, but have some thoughts:
    1.  Silver coins are nice, but I question the real sense if truly stacking.  Are we really thinking that at some point we would use them in exchange for goods and services?  Is there a high risk that once you start buying coins, the greed monster kicks in and, where you may have deliberately said "split between Brits and Maples" only, it soon turns into Kooks, Krugers (ASEs if someone is selling cheaper than normal) etc? Also, they tarnish!
    2.  One common maxim is that you watch the gold versus silver ratio.  Whilst the number is deemed high, as now at a little under 80:1, you buy silver.  When that number drops, perhaps to 50, you sell the silver and buy gold.  If you follow this, then why not just buy manageable bars (10oz, 250g to 1kg)?
    3. Everyone considers different factors when discussing the future of silver. My hope is that any manipulation of the price is relaxed/stopped, but I am also conscious that something seismic may catch us all off guard as Govs could introduce measures to control the price in line with a growing industrial consumption (Indeed, something sooner may happen if the bank exposure is truly understood). If the former, and the aforementioned ratio rebalances, the stackers are quids in with multiple 100% ROI. If the latter, we could all be sitting with dead ducks and wishing we just bought gold.
    4. Sovs v Brits.  Yes, Sovs theoretically are easier to sell on at a time of need.  If you are in a time of need, is £360 or £720 going to be sufficient?
    5. If saving for the future, ergo the long investment, then the common cry is the cost now and the premium is less important (than if you are flipping). If you are saving for the future, perhaps you are investing a set amount per month, then surely it's best still to buy the highest amount at the lowest premium?  The aesthetics and heart needs to take a second place to a more business approach.  Of course you can go down the more specific long term investment, buying a rare coin or sets of highly graded or similar, but that is another game and not stacking.
    6. Consider the current CGT and VAT rules.
    7. A couple of final thoughts:
    a) Collecting coins, gold or silver, can be addictive. Don't get attached
    b) There are many sovereigns; there are many different Au and Ag coins. Limit your horizon
    c) Consider storage space and insurance
    d) Talk to people that have been in this market for sometime.  I have found people on TSF to be extraordinarily kind when sharing advice and thoughts as well as services
    7. Last point is that I wager that what you are planning now, your strategy, will have changed within 12 months.
All the best with whatever you do.“

    With huge appreciation.
    Andrew.

I regularly do the same though going from Canada back into the UK and this is the guidance I've always followed.
Now if you're looking for a work around to bring more there is a possability to do so with silver US coinage. Silver content US dimes and quarters were and indeed still are circulating coinage so technically I don't see why you wouldn't be permitted to bring back $10000 face value of said coinage without needing to declare it.

The Victorian shield backs have been promoted in text and in video by various folks of influence in recent years. I bought quite a few of them several years back when I first started putting bigger amounts of money in gold and even then they carreid a slightly higher premium. Only reason I bought them over standard sovs or best value sovs was because of what I read here and saw on YouTube. So I'd imagine its just a case of more and more people following those voices of influence which has increased demand which has been noticed by the dealers.

Did you wind up winning it? I am just seeing this but 95% sure your suspicions were right. The big selling point of the annual sets was that they were the only way to get certain coins with the Jody Clark portrait. This was the main way the mint marketed them. I didn't buy the gold set but did buy the silver set for this reason as I figured it would make the £5 coin the rarest version of that coin in silver. Obviously the same is true though only rarer in gold.
Good find and well spotted especially if you wound up getting it.

Is this description above actually correct ?
I thought the Jody Clark portrait with the "Shield/Mantle" design was ONLY available the in annual set, with 100 mintage
The "Horse back" & "Shield Mantle" gold £5 is the more common and was a higher mintage of 400

Am I right ? or is the auction house wrong ??   that much stuff came out for the Platinum Jubilee i cannot recall if i'm right or not and totally missed it
If anyone can help or advise that would be great

I suspect you're far from alone hoping the next is just a single coin. It will be interesting to see what they do next time around. You have to imagine they'll be taking lessons from this release.

The Royal Mint Museum has not much to say about Thomas Simon…

I suspect they will pick another engraver for the next coin.
Whatever they do, I hope it won’t be a 2-coin issue.

The home page has been updated to advertise the silver coin (previously it was the gold). Seems rather telling… 🫠
Meanwhile, I have sent my feedback to  the RM that they need to read the market with such releases, that this was a bad time to release an expensive 2-coin set in silver or gold, given the cost of living situation this year, and the upcoming coronation. Who knows if they’ll read it or care, but I thought they ought to hear it from a customer.

    I’m not surprised. 🙂
This coin will be picked up by collectors who want it for their collections. It was never going to be one for the flippers looking for immediate profit.
I suspect it will go up in value, eventually, if the actual mintages end up being lower than the max, and once they are sold out from the Royal Mint and other dealers, and people feel like they’ve missed out and decide to add them to their collections.
Also, setting aside the choice of the coin for this series, I also think the timing couldn’t be worse for a 2-coin set - there’s the cost of living which most everyone is being impacted by, and then there’s the imminent Coronation in a few weeks which collectors are preparing for.

Of course, the cost of these coins will be much more than the value of the metal.  There are fixed costs, variable costs of this issue, a built in profit, etc.    It costs a lot to produce the coins.  In addition to costs for designing and engraving the coins, there are the supplies (cases, capsules, etc), marketing/advertising costs, administrative costs and salaries, etc.  if I like the coin and can afford the cost, I buy it.  Then again, I’m a collector and not a flipper.  I have never sold a coin, so I don’t view them as a quick profit.

I am fascinated by how this release has gone. The comments here and on Facebook both seemed to indicate it wasn't going to be as popular a release as previous ones in the series but I didn't imagine we'd get into the evening and still have sets available to purchase. I certainly agree with other comments that the per oz price is rather bonkers regardless of what size or metal you're looking at. I wonder if thats them thinking they can milk people for more because its a Great Engravers release or because the edge lettering incurred more work/costs. Either way I wonder what effect this lacklustre launch will have on any further coins in the series. Time will tell.
I'm glad it was easy to get the 2oz silver set and be able to keep the collection to date complete. I just hope they've done a good job with the minting of these as it will be super disapointing (especially given the price) to have to deal with any minting issues.

The design has grown on me over today.
I would like to get one of the 2oz gold at some stage.
Looks like I'll be playing hunt the bargain/desperate this coming year or two
