Ted1945 got a reaction from Silfrfish in Investigation into Historic Coin Pricing by The Royal Mint
When I first started collecting I fell foul of the RM, canny salesperson quickly spotted I was a newbie. Subsequently I have some nice old coins in tidy packaging with an SOA and warnings never to open lest the sophisticated grading EF is contaminated.
The premium to comparative coins I’ve seen on TSF hurts like hell.
Caveat Emptor foff they are exploiting trust and debasing the institution.
Fortunately having laughed at subsequent attempts to fleece me with what’s best described as s*** they leave me alone.
I wish you all the best in your endeavours. I hope the recipient of your complaint can read.

Ted1945 reacted to NGMD in NEW St. George and the Dragon coin with Garter inscription
So my replacement 5oz comes tomorrow and I’m already clicking on ‘Returns’.
This is where we are, instead of being excited on a beautiful coin, I’m apprehensive and dreading opening it to be disappointed again.
All joking aside, this is not a good thing.

I have spoken with my RM Account manager (no, I don’t have one) and he has offered me the Gold 2oz fresh from QC. He was extremely excited to offer me this opportunity. What do you think is best- left or right?
Get ready for another 70 graded me thinks!

Due to high demand and the price now over£309 for a quarter sovereign then royal mint has introduced the new 1/8 sovereign in a blister pack along with a magnifying glass and an honesty certificate.
The magnifying glass isn't for the small sovereign as that's impossible to see now it's for the certificate so you can read the small print which states there is a piece of gold Infront of you somewhere.......

Tell you what, I'm normally far too tight for proofs but these two half's were bang on the money. More than happy with these.

Ted1945 reacted to GoldDiggerDave in Gazette Proclamation - Waterloo Medal (Great Engravers 2-coin set?)
As much as I like the Waterloo Medal it's just odd why they are making these are a two coin set.
2oz gold coin 40mm in diameter
most of the silvers between 40-65mm.
What a total crock of .......t we are not going to be able to see the "master piece" of Pistrucci's work as intended at 40mm for the 5.5k+ gold and £275+ for the silver its utterly pointless and the design will be lost.
.....Royal Mint you make me want to cry.

After buying the HP set for my children they have now developed an interest in coins and are tracking the gold price.
Whilst we may find them tacky they are the gateway coins for the next generation of TSF members

Gold purchases can be for a number of reasons, including and in no particular order , savings outside bank or other scrutiny and control, benefits arising from capital gains tax exemption and if bullion ease of liquidity, an interesting pastime where you can meet like minded individuals and in some instances take a major dislike too, the opportunity to lose money on RM proof issues that are becoming daily and general collecting amusement
am sure more sensible reasons exist but there’s a couple for you
