TBH I think bartering with silver or gold is probably a bit of a fantasy. Silver, maybe at a push: but only for certain things, and probably not for your daily or weekly shop.I can't imagine Aldi or Lidl ever accepting a handful of silver Brits or a half sov in exchange for a trolley load of shopping.  I just don't see it. Who would be brave enough in such a scenario to dig out a handful of PMs from their pocket anyway..?  You would be robbed at gun or knife point in seconds.  As @AaaGee asks above (I presume rhetorically..?)  what is SHTF..?  It can be anything at all which upsets the equilibrium of life, but for all of us I suspect it will be CBDC above all else, but with other lesser alternative possibilities like somekind of civil insurrection or a series of domestic terror events.   It may of course be from natural causes such as a solar flare or a massive volcanic or tectonic event, but my gut instinct tells me the greatest likelihood is that it will be man made and instigated by the state against the little folk.  Barter, if it ever becomes a thing, will be more likely to be on a like for like basis in terms of perceived value - like a packet of fags or a bar of dairy milk for a 6 pack of razor blades and such, or a bottle of whisky for a tank of fuel for your car, that kind of thing. But silver and gold..?   What practical use or value would either of them have in a full on, hard routine, survival scenario.  I suspect little to none at all.

It's always down to individuals finding an arrangement which suits both parties with barter trading and we've not seen a lot I know of.
I took a watch as part payment for a car a few years ago, then sold that watch (and others) during the covid watch price spike.
It just takes 2 willing parties and may or may not involve precious metals.

Indeed.  I swapped a 12 string guitar for an old amp one time. I had the amp for sale and a guy rang me up and asked if I would be interested in his guitar as a straight swap and we did the deal.  I've done a few other similar deals over the years. But always Like for like as I suggested above.  People even do it on here in the buy and sell section...

I"ve been noticing this for quite a long time now. I sold a few coins last year in August and September as I needed the fiat to fund a trip,  sovs, double sovs and Brits, but I found them all very hard to shift, particularly the doubles and one-ouncers, and had to let them all go for only about 1% or less above spot.  I don't know why this should be, other than the increasing costs of everything else in life, or maybe it's just a buyers market with more people needing to sell to make ends meet, and buyers realising they can get better deals just by hanging on and waiting till the right coin comes along at a good price.
I also notice people tightening their belts in other areas too - I hardly get any offers of work these days for my little business, in spite of having a good sized customer base built up over more than 20 years, and I can only conclude that it's because no one has any money to pay me

I have noticed a recent change in the ride in PMs.

    1) They tend to be not snapped up as fast. 2) Many tubes of silver Brits dropping into the forum. 3) Royal Mint is issuing 1/40oz proof lunar year of dragon (£99) coins as more of their clients have requested them they advised me.
Are we entering a world of less liquidity? Less spending on PMs? People now need the moment to pay increased mortgages due to 6% hikes?

Is more fractional gold with 1/4oz, sovereigns, 1/10, 1/20 and 1/40oz with their higher premiums going to be increasing more liquid with yet even larger spreads between buy and sell prices?

I love a proof 1oz of gold but the market for buyers seems to be an ever decreasing one with small fractional gold bullion increasing?

    What is everyone else’s thoughts?

Instinct and the evidence of my own eyes looking at the world around me also leads me to believe this. Manipulators may try as they will to bring the price down, but world events dictate otherwise, and with everything going to hell in a handcart (when was the last time anyone actually heard some really good and positive news..?) the fiat value of gold will continue to rise with only minor fluctuations.

RM no longer sends me emails.  Last one i received from them was about a year ago, probably because after my initial flurry of buying mistakes as a new stacker I quickly learned that they were ripping me off with their premiums and I stopped using them.  If I had been asked about sovereign colour preferences I would have stated that I like both colours of yellow and rose, because I do, but I don't like the idea of gimmicky new designs every five minutes just so they can cash in, and I would have told them so.

I wasn’t one of the "lucky" folks who received the survey email. I guess I need to spend more directly with the mint LOL. 😂
It’s quite worrying the questions being asked as I really don’t have any confidence in them actually acknowledging and placing any value in the feedback they will receive. I feel they will just crack on with what they deem “best for business”. The last 2 years they have milked several ranges and made the sovereign range less appealing for me anyway. I delayed my first baby steps into the proof market solely on the basis of such poor quality control from RM and the high number of non satisfied collectors. Not just on TSF.
I would prefer them to focus on quality control and revert the sovereign back to the yellow gold finish. The copper finish is just horrendous both on bullion and proofs. The potential changes in pricing structure for 2024 may not reflect the value and quality you will receive.
Also, I think I’m the only one here that hates the packaging? Is it a laminated wood finish? For the proof boxes? I find them tacky and reminds me of the cheap wallpaper you find in poundland.
No to silver version of the sovereign. We had enough of milked britannias. We don’t need milked silver sovereigns to match.

Unfortunately that's the norm of the day. People cry for changes and get the changes they deserve. A change from merry good life to misery. That sums up politics of the 20th century really.
