Numismatic market much smaller in UK than USA therefore can get quite a large spread in prices. I think you did well getting £800 - researching through past auctions I would have expected around £650. But lets be honest - the auction house did the best collecting 26% fee for someting they don't own! Great business.

Why are the first two 1 oz gold proofs - Henry VII and James I still available at Royal Mint? Thought they would have been snapped up. Lovely series. Need deep pockets.

I buy numisamtic/graded only if I really like to own it myself and never want to sell. Also if it's PCGS it will usually be worth more than NGC.

Wish I could come along. If only it was a week later. Had to read your post again.... I read "first trip on a boat" seems a running trait for coinys 🤣
Boat tours can be arranged!

Planning to meet at 3pm in the bar area of the hotel. Those who want to stay on can make their way to the nearest pub afterwards.....
It's called 'Junction Bar' in the Holiday Inn Bloomsbury, Ground Floor.

We have had a bunch recently, all sold VAT free at about 20% over spot price.
I don't have any right now though.
VAT free at about 20% over spot 🤣 . I remember there was some discussion a while back about adding VAT to gold in the UK. Thank goodness it never happened.

😂 Just before I took the dog for a walk SWMBO came home from work and I told her I've been invited out to London...
...London, can I come?
Sure but I'm not sure you would enjoy it.
??
It's a coin fair.
🙄
Fully get you. Then they get a bit upset when they're not involved. I usually announce the news of a fun alone/boys trip a couple of days before. Seems to work better that way.

I'm thinking of heading down to the London Coin Fair in June. Would be good to meet up with members on the forum for a beer or coffee if people are up for it. Nice to put a face to some like-minded members. Perhaps trade a few coins as well. Looks like @1stsovereign and @SVcollector have stands there.
Anyone interested?

There appears to be a new Spanish 1oz gold coin

Proof coins if bought at the right price are quite a good way to protect yourself should the price of gold/silver drop. They tend to hold their value as they have lower mintages and are collectibles. But you have to sell them privately to get the premiums you would expect/want. Bullion gold is good for quick liquidation with a dealer.

I have one platinum 1 oz britannia. Very interesting to own and hold as it feels much heavier than silver or gold 1 oz due to it being a denser metal. But I think with the VAT on top it's not the best thing to collect in the UK. If you want to liquidate, the dealers will give you spot and not add on the 20% premium. Selling privately is the only way to get your 20% back. I know it's sacrilage but the best way to buy is in a platinum ETF which I may consider as platinum in relation to gold price appears undervalued in my opinion.

Really fascinating.
Just out of interest do milk spots bother people when buying bullion silver or slabbed graded silver? Would you not want a PR/PF70 coin if it had a milk spot on it?
