auleAboutNumismatics reacted to westminstrel in Gazette Proclamation - St. George and the Dragon
This is an interesting one… it’s not the Sovereign and it is buried inside the proclamation of another coin.
It’s available in:
- Gold - 1 Oz and 1/4 Oz
- Silver - 1 kg, 10 Oz, 1 Oz
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/notice/4479558
For the obverse impression Our effigy with the inscription “· CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 100 POUNDS ” and for the reverse a depiction of St George, sitting on horseback, attacking a dragon with a spear, and the date of the year, and, in micro-text, “· 1OZ · FINE GOLD · 999.9 ·” and the date of the year.

The coronation SoTD and birthday SoTD would make a good pair.
Matte, plain edge, no special reverse, no privy, with crowned and uncrowned monarch.
only the price…. 😄

Sydney mint type II sovereign with very nice portrait from Leonard Charles Wyon. I think this portrait is used only in the Australia sovereign (?)
Common date but with very nice yellow gold cartwheel lustre..

Yes, it is. The wreath in Victoria's hair is Banksia, which is a plant native to Australia. This portrait was done specifically for the Australia sovs. When they went to making ordinary sovs in Oz in 1872 they switched to Wyon's normal young head portrait.

It’s worth noting that the first Victoria design on the ‘Australia’ sovereign by James Wyon - a cousin of William Wyon, was deemed to be a bit of a failure. It only lasted 2 years 1855 & 1856 when Leonard Wyon was ordered to change it.
To me her profile on the 1855 looks a bit ‘waspish’ and was much improved by LC Wyons version.
