Gazette Proclamation - St. George and the Dragon

This is an interesting one… it’s not the Sovereign and it is buried inside the proclamation of another coin.

It’s available in:

- Gold - 1 Oz and 1/4 Oz

- Silver - 1 kg, 10 Oz, 1 Oz

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/notice/4479558

For the obverse impression Our effigy with the inscription “· CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 100 POUNDS ” and for the reverse a depiction of St George, sitting on horseback, attacking a dragon with a spear, and the date of the year, and, in micro-text, “· 1OZ · FINE GOLD · 999.9 ·” and the date of the year.

Be interesting to see what design they use.

St George using a spear rather than a sword.

The original George III sovereigns used a broken spear. The Wyon design (which EIC is selling) also uses a spear. Also comes to mind is the Valiant silver coins which could simply made in gold and that makes sense, too.

If we do the right thing this time, we might have to do the right thing again next time.

Thanks @westminstrel, these sound very exciting.

There's obviously some kind of UK/US coin series thing going on at the Royal Mint.  First we see the Lion & Eagle coin in proof, then a Britannia & Liberty coin in bullion.

I hope the the George & Dragon coin is a new design, but wouldn't mind if it was the similar to the Valiant design, that's pretty decent IMO.

That Wyon design would be ace on this new coin.  I think the Valiant coin has a lance, rather than a spear - although definitely not a sword!

If they did the Wyon design I'll be mad not to buy it.

^^^ The proclamation says it will also be made as a 1 kilo silver bullion coin, although seemingly not a 10 oz.  The design would look pretty epic on a big silver coin like that.

Only if it didn't milk!

All those sizes will be available in bullion?

Generally speaking, if the description of the coin contains the name of the metal, its weight and its fineness - it will be a bullion coin. The proofs don't generally contain this information on the face of the coin.

Always a few exceptions to keep us guessing. This is a proof:

Wyon design… the next of the great engravers?

I think if the RM ever does the William Wyon design, it will be as part of the Great Engravers series; not as a bullion coin.

My bet is on the return of the Valiant, perhaps with an updated design.

Yes, East India Company did this for 2023 while RM diverged and did the Petition Crown.

Definitely a terrific design and if the RM does it, I hope they reduce mintages drastically and improve the collectibility of the Great Engravers series again.

Una and the Lion was amazing!!! 😍

I have the EIC version… it’s such a strong design the only way to do it justice is in proof. Bullion as well, fine, but needs to be in proof also, I’m sure RM would think the same. I don’t know about rights management for designs this old  tbh. That’s the only reason I can think of why they wouldn’t…. Great find @westminstrel
