RMS Douro Shipwreck Sovereign

I wonder if collecting ‘Pedigree’ coins provides an alternative to simply collecting say years, shields, young head sovereigns etc?

I’ve just acquired a 1915-S Australia sovereign NGC MS63 Pedigree ‘Samaszko’s Carson City Gold Hoard’ and an 1870-SY Australia Sovereign PCGS MS62+ Pedigree ‘The Duoro Cargo’ which forms a basis for a ‘Pedigree’ Collection. Others I am looking for include Louis E. Eliasberg, Pittman, Terner, Cheshire, Reserve Bank of Australia, Remick, Rive D’or, Quartermaster, Ezen, Bentley, Borg, Samaszko Carson Ciry etc. to name but a few.

I understand that the advice is to buy the coin but surely a ‘Pedigree’ helps to provide a further interest? The RMS Duoro sank on 1st April 1882 following a collision with a Spanish Steamer ‘The Yrurac Bat’ off Cape Finisterre on the 1st April 1882 and the records of the collision and salvage provide compelling reading.

Any thoughts?

Bryan

I've recently purchased a coin which is ex 'douro cargo'. It came with a basic card COA with the lot number from the auction. I hope to get it graded with NCG but am conscious that this card may not be enough evidence to attach 'douro' pedigree. Does anyone a copy of the auction catalogue and willing to send me a photo of the page with my lot no.? If I could verify the coin matched the lot, I thing that would help a lot. TIA

Hi

I have a few of these, purchased graded.  A very large number were sold at auction and to dealers with no real attribution. I don’t know how hard it is to prove attribution but just be sensible in terms of your expectations.  Best of luck to you.

Got 2 of these I'm grading in my next submission.  I like them both have tiny amounts of sand still on the coins and will keep them this way not getting them conserved.

Let me know how it goes.

Douro sovereigns always go down well!

😎

@LawrenceChard Out of interest, did you buy any of the bulk lots of Douro sovereigns when they were sold?  I know just went to dealers and we’re just sold as Sovs losing their provenance.

@GoldDiggerDave I didn’t know that!

I believe there is a census of the Sovereigns found (I have seen reference to this) but have not been able to find this.  If anyone has a copy of knows where I could get one, I would be most grateful!

@dicker I’ve got loads of information saved about the RMS Douro.  I’ll dig it out and send you it. I’ve even got the PDF copies of the enquiry.

Wow I would be very very grateful!  Thank you!

No. I don't think we were ever approached or offered any, and we did not go chasing them.

Personally, I don't think it makes a coin any better just because it was recovered from a shipwreck, although provenance does count for something.
