  1. I gave my family a 1oz silver coin each last year. Which was a mistake as now my mum has the bug and I am buying and selling stuff on her behalf left and right. For my niece I have started a collection of gold sovereigns that she will get when she turns 21. She is almost 3 atm so wonder what the gold price will be in almost 2 decades!
  2. Hello and welcome to the forum. The best place to buy is the buy/sell section of the forum you will find items cheaper than the main dealers. We have a feedback system on the forum much like a popular auction site so you can see someones standing. Premium membership would be good idea as things often go quickly. I think the question is why are you buying precious metals. There is no wrong answer here. Some people buy as a long term investment over 20 years etc espcially gold has a proven track record silver is much more volitile but the barrier to entry is somewhat lower. Some people buy because there is a joy in collecting there are in my opinion some amazing looking "bullion" coins that mints around the world produce. The Krugerrand and the American Silver Eagle are my favourites. If you are looking to get as much silver as possible for your money look at spoons, forks, knives. sauce boats, candle sticks (check the base for plaster) these are often 925 silver often known as sterling silver and can often be picked up for spot value or just a fraction over. There are also of surrancy coins from around the world that have a percentage of silver in them. Personally they are not my thing as I like 999 coins. I tend to think of proof sets as collectors items. That being said I have recently purcahsed by first silver proof coins from the kings beast series with a view to seeing their long term performance.
  3. Count me in for 1 Oz of mystery silver or £25 (whichever the recipient prefers)
  4. When it comes down to it 1 oz of fine silver is 1 oz of silver. If that is in the shape of a round coin or a rectangular bar ultimately it is all the same. The design on the top might make it worth more monies if it is historic or rare. Start slow buy several different items and see what you like the look of. This could be American Silver Eagles (ASE’s), Britannias (Brits), Vienna Philharmonic (Philli’s), Australian Kangaroo’s (Roo’s) to name but a few Sigma makes a precious metal verifier which you put your items on and via science it tells you the composition. There is also a less reliable test with magnets and also a specific gravity test you can do which involves scales and a mug of water. If using Royal Mail ONLY special delivery is insured for precious metals anything less is not insured and so if it goes missing in the post you haven’t got any recourse to claim. Many people use lower standards of postage but this is the only way for it to be insured You can pay people on the forum in either paypal (friends and family) or bank transfer. Some sellers also accept crypto and cash You can click on a forum member profile to see their reputation. For example I have 119 as it stands at the moment Postage is usually at the cost and risk of the buyer only special delivery is insured so if they choose for example 1st signed for then they assume the risk of it isn’t delivered. Silver Bullets do kill vampires and if you send one to an address in Scotland it is not unheard of the recipient to get a knock on the door from the Police thinking that a para military death threat has been sent! (True story)
  5. Very interesting. Personally I didn't collect the QB's series as I only started buying silver last year which was towards the end of the series. Would be nice to collect one from the start. Maybe buy 6 of each 1 to keep and 5 to hold in the stockpile and see how they perform.
  6. Now that is a very interesting question. I think one way to look at it would be if you are a potential buyer and you had lets say 2021 sovs at the same price but one looks like it has gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson and the other had lived the good life and was minty which would you be more interested in buying? As such there may be more intest in a better looking item however price is also a factor and I don't think keenly priced sov's hang around much on the forum do they?! When it comes to coin shops/dealer I would expect that they would be paying spot value and so I would assume condition isn't as much of an issue.
  7. I agree I am a fan of a nice capsule. I keep all my coins in capsules at the moment but then again I only have a modest selection unlike many forum members. They floor boards are creaking under the weight of their collections
  8. Yes I think if you run a raffle then there has to be a free option to enter. Might be worth £5 and then forget about it until you get the email next April to say you have won 2kg of gold!
  9. Yes I have used them before. Went well
  10. Remember that the Royal Mint displays its prices without VAT so that £24 coin is actually closer to £29!
  11. You could have an issue with the density I am making the assumption that these bars will clang together to make realistic sounds. Density wise Tungstan has the closest density to gold but could be rather expensive. As mentioned above maybe get a iron or steel bar send it to be gold plated so it looks realistic. I think you can make anything you want as a prop for a movie. Could event stamp "prop" or "Fake" on on side

If you buy from outside the UK you will have to pay delivery, VAT at 20% and then the admin charge imposed by the courier company. Unless you are getting them for rock bottom prices abroad when they arrive in the UK your total cost will be comparable to buying in the UK. The days of importing silver with zero VAT from Europe are over due to Brexit. Also as Dicker says with such small margins it is a volume business on the generic bullion coins you would need hundreds and hundreds if not thousands of oz's going out the door every week to "make a wage" Here is an example: The 2021 Silver Britannia: Looking at a german dealer the price is £22.22 an oz lets say we are buying a full tube of 25 coins. Shipping: £11 Coins: £555.50 Royal Mail admin charge:£8 VAT 20%:£111.10 Total £685.60 or £27.42 an oz Now lets look at the UK: Sharps Pixley have the 2021 Silver Britannia at £26.53 for singles or £25.16 when buying 25 Now lets assume you buy a tube for comparrison: Shipping:Free Coins: £629 Total £629 or £25.16 an oz So as you can see you would be paying £2.26 more per oz to import from abroad than to buy in the UK Also you can always look in the buy/sell section of the forum that is where the best deals can be found
  13. Hello and welcome to the forum. A lot of the time the best deals can be found in the buy & sell section here on the forum. A silver premium membership (or higher) is well recommended as the best deals do go in literally minutes.
  14. It's a shame eBay are not tighter on this sort of thing.
