  1. Not seen it yet, it's a new series based on a company starting up the first gold mine in Scotland https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000t3ln
  2. I remember reading that, after the 1st world war, that it wasn't economically viable to produce sovereigns because the gold content value was higher than a pound Sterling. That's why the London mint produced no sovereigns after the war until 1925.
  3. Why does it belong to the state?
  4. It's good to know gold has beaten inflation since 1974. I tried to find a comparison for interest earned in a Bank Account over the same period but couldn't find anything, though I suspect gold would beaten bank interest too.
  5. There are still some out there to be found. I picked up this 1889 Sydney 1st head from a recent coin cabinet auction. They'd graded it as EF, but I'd put it lower than that:
  6. Came across this invoice and thought it was worth sharing. 20 Gillick head sovereigns and a 1oz Krugerrand for a total of £591.49. I'm guessing 1 sovereign was £25 x 20 = £500, leaving the 1oz Krugerrand at £91.49. Those were the days.....
  7. Good find. Ansell could have been even more helpful if he'd have cited his source, It must be in print somewhere if it's controlled by an act of law.
  8. Chards website has some useful information for new starters, but you may have advanced from this level and it's not sovereign specific: https://www.chards.co.uk/blog/precious-metals-information-and-advice-for-newbies/1008 I'm with @dicker regarding Gillicks too, you could find a very nice one for a relatively low premium. Then may be use it as a starting point for a collection, @Roy has listed a few good ideas. Careful though, collecting sovereigns can get VERY addictive!
  9. That's just given it a totally different use! 😃

    Mildenhall Dish

Roald Dahl has written a great factual book about the discovery of the Mildenhall Treasure, I'd highly recommend it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mildenhall_Treasure
  11. It's a strange coincidence that an Isles of Scilly shipwreck should show up in this thread as I've just returned from holiday there! The Association holds lots of great stories, as well as it's admiral, Sir Cloudisley Shovell. One of the treasures linked to it always makes me smile, here it is from memory: The sinking of the Association and it's fleet cost the admiralty deeply, so much so that they offered a prize of £10,000 to anyone who could solve the navigational problem of longitude, the cause of the disaster. A clock maker, John Harrison, solved the problem and received the prize money by creating the chronometer, but only after several failed attempts with other clocks. Roll on 200 years and one of John Harrison's early clocks, a long lost treasure, turned up in a lockup in Clapham, London, and later sold for Millions. As you probably know, the finders of the treasure were Delboy and Rodney! 😃 Seriously though, the full story of the admiralty prize, longitude, and John Harrison is one of my favourite reads: Longitude, Dava Sobel: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longitude_(book)
  12. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-norfolk-57520248 This article has just appeared on the BBC and makes an interesting read. Two gold coins are found together and the description under the photo reads "the coins show little sign of wear and tear". I'm puzzled because they both look very bent and twisted though.
  13. I'm finding this thread interesting. I'd be a shame to close it.
  14. I'm standing by my original prediction. Spot price £1388 on the 1st Jan Spot price £1275 on the 17th June Come the 1st Jan 2022 the price could be anywhere, but I think it still has more to fall from here before it hits bottom.
  15. Leave the minimum of information required: Name: J Bloggs House no: 23 Postcode: AB1 2CD
  16. No, I clicked on the link and it worked for me just me now, 21:19 Sunday night
  17. Like you @Pete , I received the "invite" to move over to managed payments on Wednesday. It was straight forward enough, just a matter of entering in my bank details. And then this morning, just as @pricha did, I received my first final value fee offer since March 5th. 80% off deal, which is good enough for me start listing items again. My other eBay account is still on Paypal payments and I never received a final value fee offer on that account. Form your own opinions but I guess if you're still with PayPal then you won't see any final fee offers until you make the move to eBay managed payments.
