gold/silver investing it's not an smart decision. It looks so only if you compare it with other assets (of course you can only compare it in the "now" in this exact moment). And you can only compare the "now" price against some time ago (discretionary starting points).
Even cocoa and orange juice did perform better than pm's in the last 1-3 years. yes it's cheaper to store gold/silver at home and in time stay the same more or less (milk spots,tarnish or so) Cocoa, OJ, gas petrol or so it's harder to store, more expensive and in time all become worthless as they expire.
people buy/sell things for different reasons (you  can make pro and cons for everything) and after that they will make a decision, a bet. All the decision in life/ all bets are discretionary.
take this for example:
   if today you decide to buy gold worth of 4k and in 10 years price is up you will you be happy? or you will regret you didn't invest more.
   what if price is down in 10 year, you will regret investing 4k or you will be happy that you invested only 4k.
See there no good or bad decision (you will find out if it was good or not only in the 10 years time frame). It's like how some people say if you did invest 500 dollars in Apple stock then they released the Iphone instead of buying the phone or don't drink coffe buy Strabuck stocks.
No one knows what it's best to do, it's a bet. In life it's better to be lucky than very smart. Do what you like, what make you happy/fell good and in long time will not make you to regret/sad to much.

The value of money it's the energy,time and ideas people use and consume to create other goods that are useful for other peoples that again are doing same thing.
