  1. Oh that! I could say it's my experience in handling thousands of sovereigns, of all years and mints, but let's just say I have a very keen eye for detail The biggest giveaway of course was that Lawrence had cleverly titled the photograph 😎
  2. Roy

    Try not to cry

Ha! That bought back a memory....🤮
  3. Interesting topic! I'm with Roger, I've never heard of a fake Britannia but I'm not baiting you Dave, I need to pick your brains! (I hold a lot of Britannias!) Is it only 1 oz gold Brits or fractionals too? Any particular year? Bullion or proof, or both? There are many special reverses as you know, so I can see a motive. 22k or 24k? Totally agree on the sovs, I've never been fortunate to own one but members here have and a 1887 £5 which was was bought from a dealer was discovered to be fake and had to be returned/refunded. The forgers are very clever.
  4. Just for fun and to gauge how many gold Gothic Crowns might end up on the forum 😊 Strictly anonymous. For the record though, I ticked No.
  5. Agreed, but that's probably to do with our age Hardly anyone sits at a dining table these days either. I like the early Britannia boxes with the brass sprung push button, it reminds me of opening specialist engineering tools, like a micrometer. and thumbs up for the @Alun idea, I wish he'd make it more than a hobby 😉
  6. Strewth @LawrenceChard, that's some Dong you have there! I've handled a lot of Dong in my time, actually I have 10,000 Dong twixt my fingers as we speak....😉 As a young man, I'd quite often handle up to 500,000 Dong in one day, yet my Guinness record attempt was sadly disallowed. Bah!
  7. Human error, it's not our fault mister! Do they hand finish silver proofs too? 😉 Our bully knows all about hand-finishing 😂
  8. Cashed out a load today at the top ready for the scrum on Monday!
  9. A very good point, often missed! I bought both the half and full sovereign on the 27th October 2016 for £245 and £430 respectively. I also bought two shield sovereigns the same week for £245 a piece. My spreadsheet says gold was £33.43/gram at that time. The 2017s were pricey!
  10. With the December issue of Razzle in the top left drawer....
  11. 45mm? The thing with science is you have to be consistent.
  12. Why does the sovereign measure 45mm diameter and weigh 1oz? Are you sure?
  13. Yes, I hear you. I just wondered at what level does one become a 'serious' stacker?
  14. Nice bit of kit! At what point do you think these devices earn their money? For example, if I held 5 ounces of gold, would it be sensible to pay that much for a device to test what I have? I guess it's like an insurance policy, you hope it never finds an anomaly but if it does, it could save you £$s.... but only then would it pay for itself.
  15. Another tip o' the cap to @Allgoldcoins from me too! Smooth transaction, good comms and tracking....took away the stress on release day. Perfick! The best feedback I can give is further business, please put me on the pre-order list for the SOTD Clive! 👍
  16. Well spotted, the 2005 was only produced in proof, not bullion. I only collect Britannias in 1/10oz and 1/4oz weights so I can tell you the mintages for these but not other weights I'm afraid! There were many years with mintages of less than 1000, the 2005 quarter proof was only 750.
  17. If it follows the 2017, it will be more expensive but a much lower mintage coin. The 2017 SOTD was a great buy in the end. I hated it at first, ' a plain edge sovereign?!' but they soon became sought after and proved a nice addition to the collection.
