I bought an NGC encapsulated 2015 coin with 'GEM PROOF' on the label. Don't know if it was slabbed when issued (probably) or later...
My take is that they will encapsulate anything with a meaningless label if you are willing to pay for the privilege.
(it was a RM silver proof £5 coin and i paid about the same as the slab cost)

TeaTime got a reaction from mik in Do these 1g Silver coins exist?
I saw them on Ali a while ago and tried to order some as a curiosity - the site wouldn't let me because i was in the UK (?).
I assumed that they were fantasy coins.
They appear to have used the £1 coin design and, with no denomination on them, are definitely not 'fakes' because there is no official coin matching these.
Using the queens likeness is a bit dodgy though !

TeaTime got a reaction from 365DaysofSilver in Are Britannia sets worth collecting?
The reality is that most of the 4 coin sets haven't really gained in value over the last 5 odd years and seem to hover in the £120 - £170 price range. Unless something drastic happens, they will never be a money maker.
Saying that i have most* of the silver sets because i like them - they are worth collecting if you get enjoyment from them. As an investment not so much.
The regular standing Britannia is excellent in silver proof.
    * Not every year because, quite frankly, some of the designs are awful (i'm talking about you 2011, 2013, 2017)...

Yeh, i like Britannia sets. Got 2, 1997 and 2023.
Bought them because i like them. BUT i purchased them on the understanding that they maybe not be a money spinner in the future. Just a nice thing to have and have them on show so i can look at them anytime.
Should hold their money but dont expect to retire on them.

There were an awful lot of white metal souvenir items made - by both the organisers and independent manufacturers - at that time so identifying the maker could be problematic. Memorabilia from then is still plentiful and relatively cheap for items that are nearly 100 years old.
    Good luck.

TeaTime got a reaction from Bruce06 in 2022 25 Years Of The £2 Two Pound BU Pack Error Coin Missing Privy Mark
I have a bunch of the '50 years of the fifty pence' BU coins without the privy mark (4 with and 4 without)- in this case a Spirograph type privy that should be next to the 50.
Initially i thought i had picked up a rare profit making opportunity, but i wouldn't be surprised if this was a common mistake for the RM 😐
For this to happen (on the fifty pence) they must have separate dies, some with the privy and some without. Makes you wonder why they would produce dies without it when it is part of the design. The two pound coin i can understand because it's a standard obverse but the fifty pence has 'new pence' substituted for 'fifty pence' and is unique to this coin.

The PF70s hold a huge premium as they are bought by money managers/investors. The only thing they want in their collection are 70s. It may be impossible for the human eye to tell the difference between a 69 and a 70 but it's obvious on the price tag. The 68s/69s are worthless to the investment-grade collector. They are collecting numbers on a spreadsheet, not coins

That is a simple, but crucial question
Generally, I enjoy to live a life a bit under my pay-grade, so I can effectively save money.
Sovereigns, have a bit of a magic aura for me; and they might even carry a bit of family history.
My great grand father during the mid-war times, used to save always in Sovereigns, due to the high inflation in his country, Greece.
In fact, the family survived the German occupation on stacked Sovereigns (the good old Drachma back then soon became less valued than todays toilet paper), while the neighbors literally starved to death (a significant percentage of the population died on famine back then).
I still have some pretty old sovereigns from them.  Some in the form of pendants (that seems to be have been a hit in any respectable wife's dowry), or others drilled(!) and chained together on the context of some weird local folk women's uniform piece 🙃
So for me, the Sovereigns are something like between heritage and the last line of defense in times of hardship. I would like to have a certain portion of my wealth on them, they are holy items 😀
But, I certainly do not need any fakes in my stack...

TeaTime got a reaction from stefffana in Royal Mint proofs constant quality control issues - official petition?
I think it depends whether the marks are considered as part of the minting process or are damage after the fact. In this case it looks like the scratches have been made between striking and packaging. Unacceptable on a proof coin.
I really believe that, in general, RM customers expect too much from them (i.e. when complaining about dust or fibres in a capsule, specks in frosting etc) but a scratch like that is obviously the result of poor handling at the mint..

Neither group is likely to contain the most socially adept people around.

Big shout out to @Clockpuncher for helping to complete my own Great Engravers collection with 2005 1oz gold Britannia designed by the legendary Philip Nathan. Though Philip is known for the iconic original Britannia which we have all come to love he also created 4 other incredibly beautiful 1 year designs in 1997, 2001, 2003 and 2005
