Are Britannia sets worth collecting?

Recommended Posts

Hi, these are very nice proof sets to collect if you can buy them at a fair price. The earlier, made in .958 Britannia silver are usually more expensive (especially 1997).

@Dakaras had quite a few sets for sale recently and sold them on forum at prices between £100 and £125 per set, depending of years. (If I remember well, maybe I am wrong). I am sure he can offer you a pertinent and friendly advice.

On BleyerBullion site there are for sale proof sets various years, starting from £107.11/set (VAT included)

The reality is that most of the 4 coin sets haven't really gained in value over the last 5 odd years and seem to hover in the £120 - £170 price range. Unless something drastic happens, they will never be a money maker.

Saying that i have most* of the silver sets because i like them - they are worth collecting if you get enjoyment from them. As an investment not so much.

The regular standing Britannia is excellent in silver proof.

* Not every year because, quite frankly, some of the designs are awful (i'm talking about you 2011, 2013, 2017)...

2013 was the year that they changed to 999 silver and is basically the same as most modern brits without the padlock security feature

LFTV.  live from the vault.   Spot price is immaterial. its just an illusion.

They are nice sets, generally very cheap for what they are in my opinion. I have a few - years that are special to me - kids birth etc.

I'm not sure I'd collect them all  as previously mentioned, some ain't very nice, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Also worth considering that they take up a fair amount of real estate.

As also mentioned, they will never make you rich and you need to be careful not to overpay.
