Looks an obvious fake but it's getting scary.  Another reason for my moan earlier about poor photos of multiple coins.

There are some members that sell on eBay. Though the majority of members who buy and sell choose to specifically sell on TSF because it isn't eBay and because they can deal directly with the sellers.

TSF supports itself through optional paid memberships which are purchased mainly by buyers and sellers, which goes a long way to our running costs.

Thank you to those members who choose to support TSF with Premium Membership.

Thank so much for sharing. Even coins we have serious doubts on allow us all to compare to similar. Keep us posted on the outcome from NGC. Although I may have started this thread it's not mine. I'd like to call it a community thread and am happy for it to be changed to that. This is for all of us. The more knowledge we build as a community the better.

There are a lot of coins, particularly with PCGS, that have no images on the site so not always possible - an example will be the fake PCGS 1906 I posted above:

I would assume they target these 🤷‍♂️

With slabbed coins, I would say, go on the grading company website and put the number in and see if the photo matches the coin that is being sold. A small mark on the original would catch the fake straight away if it is not such a obvious fake.

It’s worth looking at the “Binlord” thread I started.  EBay has a business model that favours volume and their premiums over quality.

This looks to be F over repositioned F in DEF, typical of the type of workmanship at the Mint during the mid 19th century.
Not sure about the D FID here but again appears to be just sloppy workmanship.

Personally, I am not an expert on ancient coins.
There is a wide variation on styles / varieties.

I won’t name here but there are other forums for ancient coins that may be able to help.  PM me if needed.

I collect shipwreck coins so they are worth more to me than others.
I would in the 410-420 range but prefer graded for many shipwreck coins - provenance is everything.

Honestly it’s been the faster race to the bottom on this forum with people selling for £21.50 per oz…..as much as I don’t like silver if it gets less than £20 per oz on here I might buy a few 1000 and play for 10-15%
just the thought of lumping around and having to store a few 1000 oz is  painful. Selling it and posting 100’s of parcels……second though someone else can play for that 10-15% I’m out.

Sadly nothing new and ebay doesn't seem to have any interest in doing anything about it as its been going on for years. I've reported many very obvious fakes over the years and they never get taken down. Ebay enjoys their cut too much and doesn't seem to give a damn about their platform being used this way.
At least you've done the right thing in educating yourself enough to know how to check. Many people buy first and learn all that later on down the road when its too late to do anything about it.

Aside from the reasons I am sure you will be aware of with respect to CGT bars, I think there is a different option for you…
Cast rather than minted bars.  I haven’t seen a cast PM ingot counterfeit for sale…
