  1. I very much like the farthing too, my 1953 Proof example has lovely colourful toning. I think Bronze & Copper coinage is often misguidedly overlooked, there’s some very interesting lower denomination coinage out there. For those not familiar with Bronze coinage, some early Farthings were chemically 'Blackened at Mint' to help prevent the Farthing being passed off as a Sovereign. There were apparently, some escapee's! Here’s my 1902 Farthing. The Third Farthing is also interesting. This 1902 was the smallest coin issued by Edward VII and although pretty consistent for Victoria coinage, the Third Farting was made for only one year for Edward VII- 1902. A Farthing was 960 to the pound therefore, there were 2880 Third Farthing's to a Pound. Although legal tender and used in Great Britain, they were mainly made for use in Malta and Ceylon where the cost of living was much less. The mintage of the 1902 Third Farthing was a tiny 288,000 and for those who are keeping up, that equates to just £100 Pounds worth of this denomination being minted!
  2. Some lovely Silver arrived today. Thank you @PapaLazarou for the Britannia Set 😃 And continuing my efforts toward a Queen Elizabeth II post Decimalisation run of Crowns/£5’s, some of the more difficult and low mintage issues, all bought from an Italian eBay seller- less than 48 hour delivery from Genoa! I particularly like the Portraits of Britain set and the Victoria Memorial/ Buckingham Palace is extremely nice. And thanks @Facey1 for the Prince Phillip commemorative.
  3. Received over the last few days- the Maurice Bull 7th Edition reference book will be helpful and the Michael Day book makes for a nice narrative and history of the English Silver Crown- these purchased at the York Coin Fair. Thanks @DuncanWylieWilson for the belated post of the Southern Rhodesia Crown, I actually received it several weeks ago and put it down ‘somewhere safe’ shortly after receiving it- found in the biscuit cupboard 🙄 Also thank you @PapaLazarou for the Piedfort Prince Phillip Crown- he looks extremely distinguished in this portrait, and thanks to the Capt’n @CaptCaveMan for the Sovereign trade- and the Jubilee/ Anniversary Crowns from an antique shop and eBay.
  4. No it’s a Cupronickel issue
  5. I’ve waited an age for these two eBay auction bargains to land. The slabs look older than the coins! And are so badly scuffed and scratched that it was difficult to get photos of the lovely coins they entomb. The one holding the 1960 New York Exhibition Crown is almost opaque.
  6. Visited York Coin Fair today. Not a scrap of Silver bought, but I did buy a wonderful example of the 1953 Coronation Set. Nice Cameo on the Cupronickel and the Bronze coins, are delightful, particularly the Farthing .
  7. I bought mine second hand- but the Cabinets can be still bought and made to order- this is my model- if you buy from them, you can specify what diameter inserts the trays have. http://www.coincabinets.com/pheon.html
  8. That’s a beautiful coin- Looks like it’s a couple of hundred years old in the photos in that lighting. A tiny flaw- nothing’s perfect in this world- if you like it- keep it 👍
  9. Personal choice on the grading- and merits in both. I have a few older Crowns and other denominations in slabs which I have bought pre slabbed- but I prefer them raw in my old school cabinet. I did however, recently purchase a Proof 1935 Crown that I have consigned to NGC to be graded- proofs aren’t as forgiving in terms of them being handled!
  10. It must have been Autumn 2019 or very early January 2020 as the York Coin Fair was cancelled because of Covid later that year- and I don’t think there’s been one since. It’s copyrighted The Royal Mint 2019. And only features the Una and the Lion.
  11. I'm not sure if they produced one for the other releases- I didn't get to the show until mid afternoon, and they had this last copy on display- perhaps they doled out loads earlier on in the day, and I just got lucky.
  12. I also have issues 2 & 3 of 'Mint Edition'. And Issue 145 of 'The Bulletin' if anyone would like them? There's a coffee cup stain and something sticky on the cover of the Bulletin- looks like an Eccles cake stain- that's my story, and I'm sticking to it!
  13. @westminstrel I have a wonderfully tasteful brochure of The Great Engravers series but I would like to keep hold of it. More of an upmarket magazine for a coffee table than a brochure. I got it from the Royal Mint stand at the York Coin Fair- there was just one on display, and it was late afternoon, I was cheeky enough to ask if I could have it.
  14. From memory Lawrence, on the old Chards site, you also made a list of coin alternatives for the Sovereign missing dates.
  15. @Silverman2U I have limited previous knowledge of Platinum, except for buying and flipping Bu 1oz Platinum Britannia coins and a couple of 1/4oz Britannia Proofs I picked up reasonably in a Royal Mint sale- for around half RRP. The 1oz was just a spot play, the 1/4’s didn’t set the world alight- but made a profit- but I didn’t get anywhere near the RRP. @Jaconet & @cliveb13 & @kneehow2018 will have insights into Platinum. The Platinum Jubilee issues appear to be extremely popular and this has a minute mintage, but the amount of people interested in Platinum, as opposed to Gold will be minute too. Im certainly not comparing eggs with eggs here- but this 3oz Platinum coin sold at the Coin Cabinet, looks like a spot play. Personally, I would be wary- but it looks like a wonderful Puedfort 👍
  16. Received these three lovely Crowns. Thanks @Iacabu for the ‘Restoration of the Monarchy’ £5. That’s the first tray in my modern cabinet filled with both £5’s and a dozen Piedfort £5’s. Three different Portraits here, I’m always surprised that the IRB Portrait endured for so long. In my opinion it’s neither a flattering depiction nor is it distinguished- and unfortunately spanned the releases of some very special Sovereign releases.
  17. Arrived today, bought from Chards. Two lovely Silver Proof £5 Crowns with interesting and modern alternative interpretations of the classic George & Dragon design. These commemorating Prince George’s 2nd & 5th Birthday- and will sit nicely beside the ‘The Royal Birth’ and the 1st Birthday £5 Crowns. If anyone has the Prince George Christening £5 Crown and wishes to part with it, please give me a shout 👍 A lovely Set! 😃
  18. I know absolutely nothing about Silver from this period but this from Spink, 2021.
  19. They are offering +3.25% over spot Do yourself a favour and at least try and sell them privately- quickest way would be to split the set- and try for at the very least +10% on the individual coins. Big difference cash wise and at +10% they would still be a bargain at around £345 per Sovereign and you’ll easily get bigger premiums for the half/ Quarter and you could sell the presentation case separately on eBay- must be worth £50 minimum. Jeez- there were only 748 of these 5 coin sets issued.
  20. Maybe she does get No1- perhaps I got Andrew’s or Harry’s Set 😉
  21. Thanks, it really is a stunner- I don’t usually grade my Crowns and keep them in a Cabinet, but this 1935 Proof one is getting consigned- I think it’ll grade highly- perhaps a PF65/ 66 Cameo, maybe even Ultra Cameo 😃
  22. Received my 2022 Silver Proof Annual Set this morning- I hit the goalpost with the COA 😂 And the last straggler of my 2022 Sovereign purchases arrived, along with a free gift of an Elton.
