First of all, thanks to @James32 and @Scootermuppet for advice on removing the tarnish on a Maple that i received in a batch.
So i gave it a go, despite the word of warning from @LawrenceChard 🤓 , and i'm quite pleased with the result.
However i was interested to find out what was happening when the coin was in the solution, and, although i had an idea, i did a little Googling.
As i thought, it was an electrolytic process. What happens (i'm happy to corrected though) is that the bicarb and the foil turns the tarnish, which is a silver sulphide, back into silver (which i understand remains on the coin) and the releases the sulphide which attaches itself to the aluminium foil, becoming aluminium sulphide.
So my logic tells me that however long i leave to coin in the solution, the process won't continue if the tarnish has gone, and the coin won't loose any of its mass into the solution.
So i'll accept the challenge from Mr Chard, and will put a coin in a solution and weigh it each day for a week and refresh the solution. I'll start a new thread tomorrow and will update it every day if anybody is interested?
Its not that important in the grand scheme of things, but i get obsessed with things like this 🤓

Worst case scenario, you will have a 1/2 oz coin by end of August 😁

"Koalas sleep for 22 hours per day. The rest of their time is spent eating and wandering around aimlessly looking for a mate. When they don't find one, they'll eventually give up and go back to sleep."
It's hard routine being a fearsome drop bear!

chasetyre reacted to LawrenceChard in Were these too expensive when first issued?
Whether they were overpriced is rather subjective, a matter of opinion.
The original purchasers were undoubtedly happy (ish) with the cost price, but typically the secondary market prices for coins like this are much lower than new prices. Just be happy you waited, although you still paid about 2 - 3 times intrinsic value.
Definitely don't sit on them. This might damage or discolour the packaging, and may also cause or exacerbate haemorrhoids.
They are also unlikely to hatch out into fifty pences!

I try very hard not to buy or sell abroad now that's it such a lot of hassle.
Saying that I accidentally sold a coin to the US on ebay last month (I forgot to turn off the international shipping).
I was in two minds to send it or just give the buyer a refund. I warned them it could take months to arrive.
I sent it in the end and was amazed that it was delivered within a 5 days, no hassle no problems.

I would suspect it is due to costs. Greedy bank wanting to make even more money.
Don't doubt it's far cheaper for the banks to make digital transfers rather than the old fashioned cheques.
Wasn't it only a couple of years ago that the Bank of England (or might have been the government) were going to scrap cheques altogether and make every one use electronic transfers.
I wonder who was pushing for that, as it was certainly not the general public.
Perhaps Barclays are trying to do that through the back door, oh dear our system not working, we will fix it at some point, but not until we convince every one to us electronic transfers first

Final update: PayPal gave me £55 as a goodwill gesture and Royal Mail have just sent a cheque for £50+postage as on my lost item form I stated that it wasn't a genuine coin, it was a replica, therefore should be covered.

If I had only posted it with Special Delivery it would have either got there or I would have been refunded. I am never sending anything any other way. A very valuable lesson.

Disappointed in myself, disappointed in the system that has no allowances for a human touch. Just automated yes/no black/white.

Seller responsive on eBay but just saying he's offended I've accused him of trying to defraud people and feels like I'm suggesting he is a delinquent because I gave a negative review (lol).

Wonder if I'd paid £1450 he'd still have been offended. He probably needs the cash more than me.

At least I've got a story out of this to warn others:

Don't buy unless from a trusted source
    Don't post cheap
Don't escalate to PayPal before eBay has completed their resolution process
    Don't be stupid

So, once again we see coins with obvious marks/damage sailing through "Quality Control"
The hilarious thing is that these coins have been delayed for nearly 3 months! Plenty of time to get things right you would think...
The hilarious thing is that upon first when unboxing I was super excited as they looked really good.
But after filming I noticed the glaringly obvious issues on these coins - I had to go back and refilm the last part of my video!

    Really really annoying.
The little ding on the reverse frosted proof - yeah maybe that can be missed.
The giant smear on the back of the regular Britannia? Come on, that is just not acceptable.
The level of quality control (or lack thereof) is so stark that the Royal Mint cannot seem to even print out an invoice.
Yes, printers have issues sometimes, but the person packaging the box thought it was acceptable to put the invoice like this!
