  5. I try very hard not to buy or sell abroad now that's it such a lot of hassle. Saying that I accidentally sold a coin to the US on ebay last month (I forgot to turn off the international shipping). I was in two minds to send it or just give the buyer a refund. I warned them it could take months to arrive. I sent it in the end and was amazed that it was delivered within a 5 days, no hassle no problems.
  6. I would suspect it is due to costs. Greedy bank wanting to make even more money. Don't doubt it's far cheaper for the banks to make digital transfers rather than the old fashioned cheques. Wasn't it only a couple of years ago that the Bank of England (or might have been the government) were going to scrap cheques altogether and make every one use electronic transfers. I wonder who was pushing for that, as it was certainly not the general public. Perhaps Barclays are trying to do that through the back door, oh dear our system not working, we will fix it at some point, but not until we convince every one to us electronic transfers first
  7. Royal Mail will add there own handling fee on top of the VAT as will the other carriers such as UPS etc. No it's not normally worth it on cost as you will pay more than just getting it in the UK. The only time it's worth it is when you can't find it in the UK and you really really want it. Yes you could have it sent to your friend, then sent to you as a gift, but there is a maximum value for gifts. So make sure you look up the what the current limit is, as I don't think its very high. I recently bought a coin box for my slabs (you don't see nice ones in UK very often) from Canada and I paid the VAT through the sellers internet platform which they pass to the Inland Revenue. This save you the handling fee as the VAT has been paid, so it's just delivered normally. I have also bought through Ebay from Europe and they do the same, again you are not saving any money as you are still paying the VAT
