So glad to hear of this excellent outcome. I have just gotten round to reading through this and while I'm sad to hear a scammer has been active on the forum again it's great that the banks have sorted you out.

On three occasions, I have had to retrieve payments sent to individuals who never delivered the goods and two times been successful. The first time, where I wasn't successful, was from a Facebook member who remains active to this day.

It is so lovely to see members donating their own silver to help out the member! What a wonderful community.

I read with interest suggestions from various members for methods to protect buyers from scamming sellers. To summarise these:

- an ID check service (clear regulatory challenges with this suggestion)

- a community fraud fund where funds could be applied for in the result of a fraud. Nice idea and worth putting heads together to see how this could work practically.

- donations of PMs from members as BYB so kindly helped with.

 

There are also a handful of options and precautions existing and these are worth summarising and reiterating as members are not always aware of these options.

One of note is the escrow / intermediary service offered by BYB and others.

Would maybe be worth another thread where some kind of community run/funded buyer protection service could be discussed and the details of how it could work are ironed out. I for one would definitely be interested to contribute to any ideas and the running of such a service.

Thankfully these incidents are incredibly rare on this forum and long may that continue. Hopefully such a service would rarely be needed, especially if banks continue to pay up, but would be there to the rescue when required.

Only actually read this thread for the first time this morning and delighted to see a happy ending.

Although I'm not the most active or vocal on the forum, I've been here a while, and must admit I'd have been devastated/furious had this happened to me. It was nice to see the OP handle it with dignity and a calm head, and the forum help to get it sorted.

Great news, I had heard that there are a few of the banks that have signed up to a code of conduct that means that anyone that has been clearly scammed or pushed into transferring money will have it or some of it returned. I believe that is soon to be rolled out in a form of legislation and all banks will have to return funds that can be proved were sent as part of a scam. This is part of the reasons for the added questions when transferring funds.

Great news. Do you know if they managed to actually recover it from the scammer's account?

(Not to be a downer but I also hope this stuff doesn't make it harder to use bank transfers for bullion trades, given @BackyardBullion's recent experiences.)

Yes great news really pleased, I hope banks get on board against scammers and if they have to refund people who are paying to an account,and can prove a fraud then the banks might be a bit more careful and helpful.
