hi , can I ask members if this price is good for that coin ? I need expert opinion please.

@James32

I may be wrong but it feels too high for the grade. I'd ask the following members who know more than me about shields.

@dicker @Orpster @ZRPMs @modofantasma @GoldDiggerDave @pricha

I like to buy the pre-dip dip

@James32 thanks for the tag, certainly more experienced in here than me but to start you off....

@Rafal

My price guide is a little out of date (Seabys 1965)

Graded coins. Only just falling in to that rabbit hole. I would have to bow down to others expertise. @GoldDiggerDave has given me some pointers on graded coins. @dicker has given some great advice on my early sovereigns so I'm sure he would be a fountain of knowledge on shield sovereigns. As @modofantasma pointed out I could only look for recent sold listings at auctions. All I could say is that it's rarity is normal. I had seen it earlier and thought it was about the retail price for an au graded shield.

thank you @ZRPMs will have to rethink this price and discuss with the owner what he wants to do.

@Rafal Hi the NGC price  guide can be helpful,

https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/world/great-britain-sovereign-km-736.1-1838-1872-cuid-1169252-duid-1335113

With any NGC coin its always worth looking at the population reports as a mid grade coin may be more desirable in a lower portion of coins, the highest for this year is MS64

https://www.ngccoin.com/census/world/great-britain-1816-1901/sc-349/1sov/?c=462103&des=MS&grade=58&from=ngcresearch

Price always comes down to two things supply and demand.   If this coin was raw in a retail situation I can see a dealer listing this for £600+ (but thats a dealer)   Chards have a raw one 1857 aVF/gVF for £807.63

Agree its what people are willing to pay at any moment rather than it is graded therefore its £×××.  I'd have snapped it up in an instant a few month ago but unfortunately not at the moment.

thank you and appreciate your honest opinion.

I have recently bought a couple of graded shields and one was an AU58:

I paid £500 for the 1881S in AU58, this is rated as scarce by Marsh with a mintage of 1.3m, though I would value it around £550 were I selling it.

The market for selling on graded or premium coins is a bit depressed at the moment, very much a buyers market I'm afraid.  I would say an 1857 would be a similar price to the 1881S above, as although it is not rated scarce 1850's do seem to sell well usually, where the colonials are a bit more niche and less popular.  I would usually be interested myself but while Tavex have the coronation sov's at the price point they do I will be buying those whenever I can and concentrating on bang for my buck.

I'd say people who collect slabbed coins go for the highest grade they can afford.. for the average Joe collector like myself , the slab only indicates its genuine , problem free and I would happily take it out of the holder but I wouldn't want to pay over for the plastic.  I'd really love this coin . I should stop looking. 😆
