The Big 5 bullion, 25 years?

The Elephant is now out in 1oz gold Bullion. Beautiful coin and I think they have captured the design of an elephant very well.

As I write the coin is available from Atkinsons for £1565, with each new release being 5 years apart.

Start to finish this series will take 25 years to complete.

It will start of with an elephant followed by a lion, rhino, leopard and finally a buffalo.

I'm very tempted to sign up as I'm a huge fan of an elephant, lions are just majestic, rhinos have that look about them, leopards hmmmmm yh what ever, and the buffalo everyone loves a gold buffalo.

I think they change the elephant every 5 years, but the next year will be the lion. It’s the same program of the silver coin.

Oh so the lion will come out next year and not in 5 years ?

I just bought myself one of these. It's the first time I've bought a non-UK coin, so comparing it to the Britannia: my first impression on opening the envelope was that it's nowhere near as shiny, and the design looks to be much flatter than the Britannia. So initially I was a bit disappointed. But it's so detailed! I can look at it for so much longer than the Britannia, and I keep picking out more detail every time. Just changing the angle slightly causes the light to pick up completely different parts of the design and makes the coin look totally different. Therefore it's grown on me very quickly, and now I'm glad I bought it, but it did need a bit of effort to get there.

Up-thread (a couple of months ago) somebody asked for photos, so here is my best effort. I'm off to read the threads about taking better photos now!

It's not meant to shine like a britannia, it has more of a buffalo type finish. Beautiful and thanks for sharing 👍

Wouldn't it only be 20 years to complete? 2022, 2027, 2032, 2037, 2042.

It'a all a bit confusing!

Wait, 5 animals x 5 designs equals 25 coins! Dig deep!

Very as there is Big 5 series II, which may just be proof ones. Are they trying to get us as confused as RM manage. And looks like Atkinsons have in stock the Elephant at £1700 less a few shekels.

Just seeing this thread! Very tempted.

We currently live in Southern Africa and my son was born in South Africa. So this collection might be a nice gift for him at some point.

Well buy us some and ship over. Will see you right😉

Well having delved into these coins am more confused than ever. Reading this

https://coinsweekly.com/south-african-mint-launches-big-five-series-ii/

If believing above article pictures posted earlier seem to be first series dated 2022, then mentions new depiction in series 2 but is dated 2021

Well hope somebody can enlighten me as to what is going on here.

How do you know it's not meant to be shiny? Speaking as somebody who has only ever bought sovereigns and britannias, is there a way I could have realised this from the description or technical specs of the coins before I'd bought? Nobody seems to list "shininess" in the coin specs 🙂 I'm asking out of curiosity and to try and educate myself, not because I'm annoyed at the lack of shininess!

When buying mine, I figured out the following regarding different series. I hope it clarifies some of the confusion:

  • Between 2019 and 2021, they released Series 1 as silver, and gold proof, one animal every six months
  • Since 2021, they've been releasing Series 2 as silver, and gold proof, one animal every six months. So far 3 animals have been released.
  • Starting last year, they're releasing Series 1 as gold bullion, one animal every year [EDIT: That last sentence turned out to be wrong, see later in the thread, here]. So far just the elephant. Given the slower release rate, this is obviously going to keep falling further and further behind the silver/gold proof versions. That said, I found no indication if Series 2 will ever appear as bullion, or not.

I also saw, unhelpfully, some sites describing a coin for sale as from "Series 1" but with a picture from Series 2, or vice versa.

I haven't seen anything to say that there will be 5 different series, and I'm not sure where the 25 years mentioned in this thread came from?

Experience.

Britannias = shiny, almost glossy

Big 5 = South African therefore safe to assume krugerrand territory only in 24ct.

Looking at pic on Atkinsons website looks about right and is obviously not shiny like a Britannia. Much more like as out of same mould as US buffalo which I actually prefer. Having said that the shiny bits of my 2023 Panda are gorgeous, so ignore all the forgoing drivel.

Thanks @ozzie456 for providing that bit of info that was quite helpful.

The 25 years aspect i got from the link at the very top. It states the big will introduce an animal every 5 years unless it is a typo.

The same is stated by atkinsons with the link above.
