Spotted this listing just now - https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/potteries-specialist-auctions/catalogue-id-srpot10227/lot-f669a671-e73b-47ef-81b8-ae6d00df80cd?queryId=7848e0d1549172bda99c304cdb601077

I am making an assumption this is a poor quality fake - what do TSF members think?  No doubt @LawrenceChard can give us the benefit of his considerable experience.

I haven't been in contact with the auction house.

The photos are what are known in technical terms as c**p, so it is hard to be certain, but it is likely the coin is also a c**p fake, typical euphemism / optimism from yet another auction house not having the specialist knowledge or experience to do their job right.

I grabbed a screenshot of the auction listing:

2059543953_1918FakeSovereignPotteriesAuctions.thumb.jpg.f86a20a7f5f04ae6bea1aecf549d28dc.jpg

As we can see, it is lot 690a, by Potteries Auctions, of Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire.

08 - 09 Apr 2022 10:00 BST (2 day sale)

I took a quick look at their "Additional fees apply" link:

"Additional Fees:

Commissions*:    29.94% Inc.VAT/sales tax

*Includes buyer's premium and online commission. For more information please read the auctioneer's T&Cs."

Important Information
*IMPORTANT INFORMATION - COVID 19* - The auction will be online with limited in person bidding by appointment only.

We are now able to offer viewing by appointment only.

Packing and posting service available. Collections strictly by appointment only and must be pre-paid. Please visit our website for further information. Thank you.

Buyer's Premium 20% + VAT

Lots purchased online with the-saleroom.com will attract an additional charge for this service in the sum of 4.95% of the hammer price plus VAT at the rate imposed

Payment is accepted by Bank Transfer, Cheque (with seven working days clearance). Credit Card or Debit Card (under £250) & cash.

Please note: We do not accept credit or debit card payments for Customer Not Present Transactions. We provide an in-house packing and postage service. Our UK charges are as follows:

Upto 2kg inclusive of VAT and Packing £18.00
Over 2kg inclusive of VAT and Packing £35.00

We offer insurance at a cost of 5% of the goods value. Items will not be covered for loss or damage without insurance.

*Please be aware that the charges above are only a guide and lots with multiple items requiring a lengthy packing time may be subject to a higher charge.

Please note a charge of 3 % plus VAT is added to credit card payments.

c.  Sellers commission rate is 16% + VAT on lots sold with a hammer price of over £101. Lots sold for £100 or less are charged at 25% + VAT. There is also a lot fee of £3 per lot.

It makes me wonder how and why this auction manages to stay in business, apart from the fact it make huge profit margins with its fees, commissions and other charges. What I really don't understand is why anyone ever uses it to sell anything, or why anyone buys from it.

Let's assume someone was stupid enough to pay the intrinsic value of a genuine sovereign (£346), they would need to deduct enough from their bid, divide by 1.3, to leave £266. If they paid by credit card, and wanted the item posting insured, this would cost another £18 + 8% of the sale price (about £46), so £220.

The seller would be paying 16% + VAT = 19.2% commission, so would receive less than £185!

@MJCOIN Are you thinking of asking the auctioneers is the coin is genuine, and how they know?

😎

Slightly off topic but still on the discussion of auction houses, their often noted lack of knowledge,  and their silly fees.

I enquired at a "specialist" auction house (Specialist because they specialise in selling only guitars) about selling one of my high end guitars which was hand made by one of the worlds premier luthiers. The price they suggested it would fetch was around £1500-1800 and from that I would have to pay a 15% sellers fee and a courier charge of £75 to get the guitar to them.  The buyer would have to pay an eye watering 26% buyers premium on top of the actual sale price.  Both their terms of business and their valuation of the guitar were clearly ridiculous and I rejected them immediately.  I later sold the guitar privately to a buyer who understood what it was and it's true second hand worth which was in fact closer to £3.5k.   It astounds me that so many of these auction house charlatans with apparently little knowledge who masquerade as specialists can continue in business and not get caught out.

This is one area where the internet should help, by enabling people with highly specialised minority interests to connect, and it does work, although like long wave radio, there is a lot of distortion, interference and noise.

It would be interesting to hear the name of the specialist auction house you mention.

Also what was the guitar? (not that I know much about them).

The guitar was a Fylde Alchemist - hand made by Roger Bucknall who is based in Penrith.  I believe the current new list price for this particular guitar is around £5400.00 along with at least a two year wait - he's a very busy man.

The so called specialist auction house who got it completely wrong as far as I'm concerned can be found here..   https://guitar-auctions.co.uk/

The auction house has replied to my query about this. They said ‘ 100% genuine, correct weight and size it has a mis stamp’.!!

You could try asking what level of numismatic expertise they have!

And we scrap lots of fake sovereigns which are the correct size and weight. The auctioneer sounds like a moron!

I will ask our guitarist friend Frank Usher about them when I see him next.

I have just "joined" as a new member, then I attempted to ask this question:

"Even from your poor quality photos, this appears to be an obvious counterfeit.
Do any of your staff have any relevant numismatic expertise or experience?
What guarantees do you provide?"

I selected the option to send a copy of my message to my e-mail address, but because I have been suckered in this manner by websites previously, I "copied" the message to the clipboard before hitting "send". Just as well, because:

I got an instant pop-up, which then disappeared, saying something to the effect:

OK

Have I even mentioned how much I loathe these "Computer says no - OK" messages, which fail to give a "No, it's not OK" option?

I will try a page refresh to see if that works.

Unsurprisingly, it doesn't

Let's try a CtrlF5

Still no, FFS!

I hope I don't have to "Clear all cookies" to get this pathetic site / page to work!

Closing the tab, and re-opening doesn't work. How about trying an incognito window?

If you look at any auction they have ridiculous starting  points for items. Trouble is unless you state what you want as a reserve then an item could go for anything. I have been in the room when a plate with a price of £100 to £150 fetched around £35,000. The Chinese bidder then paid, put it in bubble wrap in a carrier bag, got the auction house to call a taxi and went off to the train station! Coins …. well don’t get started!

I buy quite a bit of antique silver from auctions and it totally baffles me when I see sovereigns and other bullion for sale in a catalogue. What sort of moron would sell their gold at 60% of spot!

I really wish I knew who these people were.

The odd one is ok Eastbourne auction house is shortly having a no commission gold coin auction, what you pay when you win is all that you pay.

"Is that a real person answering, or an auto response?
Did you read my e-mail?
Does anybody there have any numismatic experience, qualifications, or expertise.
This is almost certainly a fake coin.
The only reason I say "almost" is the poor quality of your photos.

I know that obviously  people make enquiries about auction lots, but I wonder if anything’s been said in the office about the interest in this coin? Probably think it’s going to go for a fortune!! 😁

I doubt if anybody there has spoken to each other about having two enquiries / challenges to its authenticity. they have probably just shrugged it off as a couple of know-it-alls, or idiots. There is just no helping some people, especially those who would prefer to remain in ignorance.

Local auctions can be a bit hit and miss but the better (regional) auction houses don’t make this sort of error that often.

The better ones definitely listen and don’t give you a brush off

'It [socialism] poses a growing threat, however unintentional, to the freedom of this country, for there is no freedom where the State totally controls the economy. Personal freedom and economic freedom are indivisible. You can’t have one without the other. You can’t lose one without losing the other.'
