Illinois Mayor Grants Herself Power To Ban Gun Sales And Alcohol During Coronavirus Epidemic

Champaign, Illinois mayor Deborah Frank Feinen signed an executive order on Thursday declaring a state of emergency to address the coronavirus.

Among the sweeping powers she gained after signing the executive order was the ability to ban the sale of guns, ammunition, alcohol and gasoline - as well as the power to cut off access to individuals' gas, water or electricity, according to the Washington Examiner.

The city can also "take possession of private property" and order the temporary closing of all liquor stores and bars.

Now here is someone who has “Re-election” written all over her!!🤣

To me it suggests she is either afraid of being shot or burnt at the stake by a drunken mob.

Always cast your vote - Spoil your ballot slip. Put 'Spoilt Ballot - I do not consent.' These votes are counted. If you do not do this you are consenting to the tyranny. None of them are fit for purpose.
A tyranny relies on propaganda and force. Once the propaganda fails all that's left is force.

COVID-19 is a cover story for the collapsing economy. Green Energy isn't Green and it isn't Renewable.

Could be...but she should realize that 90% of her  city is probably already stocked to the gills with everything she is attempting to ban!😂

This is IMHO a bit OTT unnecessarily  draconian - I dont see how that would help a VIRUS sufferer or it's spreading to be stopped!

you just know there is a massive economy crash ahead when Boris Johnson says "new financial crisis would be temporary and not on the same scale as 2008 '

I Received a letter from Westminster yesterday which I thought it was my new business rate bill for 2020-21 , instead it said that my business  is eligible for %100 business rate relief 🤔

I don't know if I should be happy about that or not, on one hand I'm going to save £10,000 in one year on the other hand it's a worrying sign .

Well, of course it is over the top, but if looking over the whole article, the mayor of said city has these powers authorized by them in city articles even beforehand. One could say that it is much, like most media, highly sensationalized, to draw a reaction. It would make no sense to cut off citizens access to those resources for a COVID-19 response. But perhaps for another emergency response there may need to be a reason to cut access to gas, power, water due to perhaps major conflagration, flooding, fire, etc. These are just city articles of provision and the media mis-shaping the perception, in my opinion.

You should see some of the weird outlandish and unthinkable laws some cities have. One often doesn’t know they exist, and they were written so long ago that they had some intended purpose long ago, but will often be laughable.

Yeah I'll go along with that buddy!👍

There is hype and false news etc everywhere at the moment!🙄

It is a situation that is escalating in ALL sorts of ways that WILL cause (IMHO) a major recession if not a "depression" 😲

@CadmiumGreen, as my 'favourite U.S. spokesman', how are you affected by the virus so far, or indeed if at all?

Technically, alcohol is a solution..

Personal freedom and economic freedom are indivisible. You can’t have one without the other. You can’t lose one without losing the other.'

It's pretty grim @richatthecroft tbh.

Manila is in a total lockdown (land, sea and air) meaning nobody can get in or out.

It's virtually martial law only the police are pointing the guns not the military.

We don't have a problem with panic buying because nobody has any money...most folk here are employed on a no-work, no pay basis.

I really feel for them, they will happily work despite the virus. Welfare? Pah.

It's going to ruin the Philippine economy and put so many more into poverty 😞

Its not, its a power that might be needed in another scenario.  Say there's a earthquake or forest fire you'll want to stop gas, if there's accidental pollution of a reservoir you want to stop the water.  These powers will be on the statue, maybe updated regularly even voted on, no one pays much attention to local politics.

Not a good scenario- thanks for the insight.

I am thankful enough to be able to see the effects from both a global scale down to the microcosm of our local communities acting as such in response. I am inundated with the near daily dynamics of the changing situation of constraints, limitations and restrictions from my personal family, my military reserves and my civilian job...so it is a bit overwhelming trying to juggle the care and welfare of diverse and multi-layered responsibility for folks. Not a great deal of hoarding in the local grocery...of course the usual outages of bog roll, thermometers, hand sanitizer, pastas, most all daily fresh meats in the afternoon were completely gone (but will probably be restocked in the morning). Schools have been closed for a month, so we implemented our own in home schooling regaining to maintain. Some talk, mind you talk, of schools being closed for the remainder of the school year.

Work is implementing levels of response and allowing maximum flexibility, possible shift like constructs to support the social distancing. Personally, all with the exception of travel, I have been practicing social distancing for many years!😁 I hate large crowds of people and don’t go out any where any more. So I have more or less been preparing for this...but I do like to interact with folks at work, so that is probably one of the harder things I am dealing with. So overall it is welcome to the new normal!!😄

Now that I identify with! 😃

I expect the level of petty crime to increase as desperate people take desperate measures. It's affecting everyone, even the street beggars 'wash windshield joe?' have no customer base.

(Yes, they all call me Joe...a legacy left behind by your lot 😉)

That's not true at all.  Air traffic in and out of MNL is operating as normal.  I'm watching flightradar24, flights just departed for Doha, Abu Dhabi, Bangkok, China.  Flights arriving from Singapore, Indonesia, Muscat, Xiamen.
