Looks like gold and commodities will remain as interstate settlement methods between BRICS. 

The new currency will be based on the local fiat currencies transferred onto the blockchain like the ERC-20 (Ethereum) token. It's basically BRICS digital currency running on western blockchains and is due to have a prelim release in October 2024 (BRICS summit, 16/10)
