BBP should see it as either:

1) Stolen by Postie

2) Delivered to wrong address

3) Delivered to right address but signed-for by household member who has forgot to mention it

4) Delivered to right address and addressee is trying to pull a fast one

1,2,3 are quite common but 4 is rare.

BBP should have confirmed your delivery address and checked the delivery office to confirm they do match.  They should have also asked you to confirm that no other household member has signed for it and forgot to mention it. Once confirmed, they should have sent out a replacement and then claimed on their insurance.

It doesn't really matter if the item was sent Special or Signed-for.  Special is less likely to be stolen/go missing and is Royal Mail insured but full responsibility should fall on BBP.  They have goods in transit insurance and they probably factored in loss vs delivery costs before opting for an Insurance Policy rather than paying Special Delivery rates.

Many moons ago I was sent a Special Delivery packet which was signed for and delivered but it wasn't delivered to me.  Checked with neighbours and the "other house" which sometimes gets our mail/parcels (same house number but diff street).  The sender put in a claim and I signed a declaration stating that it was never received by my household and the sender was compensated.

Thanks morezone I will message them

That's how I would've handled/dealt with it if it has been my customer.

Their prices are higher than most (web site anyway) and their postage/insurance model should allow for this kind of thing.

I have had an email, Bullion by Post, are sticking to their guns and insisting on following procedure. They have stated that items very rarely go missing and when they do it needs investigating. BBP have stated they will get an answer from the Royal mail early this week, I'm not sure about that as it can take up to 2 weeks for a Royal mail investigation especially one with a Gold coin involved the Post office Royal Mail take it very seriously ( thats what i have been told by a Postman who takes out special delivery).

I have checked my receipt from BBP and it states special delivery, it was sent out signed for, this may seem only a little different but over the weekend i have realised that signed for is not worth anything to the recipient/buyer and in fact is a burden.

Signed for is delivered with the 1st and 2nd class mail and can be left at 'the neighbours house' this means anywhere near your home as long as the postman gets a signature. He does not have to put a note through your door, he does this through courtesy.

In essence signed for is for the seller not for the buyer, it puts the buyer at a disadvantage especially with paypal and Ebay.

Apart from one occasion with one member on the silver forum (very small purchase) I have always bought Gold using Special delivery the royal mail have a list of items they suggest that should be sent Special delivery

Link    http://www.royalmail.com/personal/help-and-support/I-need-advice-about-sending-money-and-jewellery

This gives the buyer security too.  Special delivery is sent out separately, has your address tracked properly, the postman can only deliver it to your door, has a guaranteed 1pm delivery so if you don;t receive it by 1.30pm you can report it to the seller.

So what have I learnt, well never pay for sign for if you are a buyer on ebay or paypal thats the sellers guarantee.

When buying Gold always pay for Special delivery I did but got signed for, so make sure thats what you are getting!!!

DO I think I will get my Sovereign or my money back I don't know.

+1

Anything over £32 should be sent Special. Recorded Delivery/Signed for is a waste of time.

I would also add that it does not give you adequate protection as a seller on ebay/paypal, only Special Delivery is considered proof enough if the buyer is claiming the goods never arrived. ( I have been tempted to raise a claim when a cheapskate seller overcharges on postage and sends it out Signed For :) )

Currently stacking 1/4 oz (22ct) and Sovs.

Atkinsons made me wait until the investigation had been made or started as well when RM lost an order.  It showed as having gone out for delivery but no signature was received.

I hade to sign some form saying I wasn't pulling a fast one and possibly the form/case could be passed to the police.

Thanks Murph, the thing is the sign for is not proof of delivery for the buyer and it can be delivered anywhere within a reasonable distance and the postman does not have to check the signature unlike Special Delivery.

Someone has signed for the parcel with a scribble, I was the only person in that day my wife and the 2 small children had gone out.

From now on I will right on my signature  plus something else  that only I plus the bullion company knows.

My sov from BBP was 'allegedly' dispatched on the 23rd and I'm still waiting. I've opened up a case today on eBay, could be a case of watch this space.

It isn't the first time I've had trouble with BBP, last time someone had signed for my parcel 4hrs before It was delivered to me...... (They just blamed the postie)

I wonder, do the packages have "Bullion by Post' plastered all over them?

Just playing Devil's advocate....why would postie nick an anonymous package and risk his job?

Could be parts for a washing machine or an old motorbike. Or false teeth.

I now have proof the parcel was mis-delivered, the Royal Mail used the GPS to track where it was delivered to, they are trying to recover the parcel.  The problem is I am thinking that I should now reject the item as the person if honest would of contacted Royal Mail before now or tried to contact BBP or contacted me.  The Person must be dishonest though it was the Postmans mistake it was a mistake and we all make mistakes.

The recipient could of easily of opened the parcel damaged the Sovereign or indeed sold the Sovereign and put a fake coin in the parcel and sealed it back up, after all the messing around I have had with Bullion By Post I am not confident that if any of the fore mentioned was to happen  that I would be happy with the outcome and would burdened with more time and stress spent trying to deal with this company.

Would I be in my rights to reject the parcel and demand a full refund through Ebay.

As the parcel itself has now been in the hands of an unknown 3rd party I would believe you can, as BBP could no longer guarantee when you receive the item that it is what they sent.

This bare in mind is IF you even get the parcel from whoever currently has it.

I have asked Ebay to step in now, the parcel was delivered to the wrong address, the Royal Mail local office let the complaints know yesterday, Bullion By Post have not got back in touch  like they said they would (keep me informed) its gone deadly silent . I have included a post office ref number in my Ebay escalation.

I cannot see why BBP have not given me a refund, This now looks like they are stalling.

From a companies perspective, they would give you a refund once they have the item back.

Currently the entity that's in the wrong is the post office, they left the goods at the wrong address. BBP would want the post office to confirm the item has been wrongly delivered and returned to them before any refund would be given.

However you would of thought as a lot of big companies do nowadays, they would refund then deal with it after the fact.

SoulUK I think they are waiting for the Sovereign to be picked up by the Royal Mail and delivered to me still sealed. I'm doubtful this can be done and they are grasping at straws. The fact the item is a Sovereign means that this dishonest person now knows I have Gold and my family are now in my eyes not as safe.  That is why the Royal Mail take Gold going missing very seriously.

The party that has sustained a loss here is the buyer (me), under UK law my contract is with Bullion BY Post (who should of had insurance), I have given the courtesy of letting the Royal Mail investigate and find where the Parcel was delivered and attempt to retrieve it and they have tried.

I think the proof that the Royal Mail have stated that the item has not been delivered, proves that i have not received my purchase.  BBP have not fulfilled the contract with me. I know this because I as a company owner had the same happen to me.  BBP should refund me then go after the Royal Mail, it was not my choice of courier or type of courier system (sign for) it was Bullion by Posts choice (I also know this).

Bullion by Post must decide what sort of company they are, are they a big bullion company that looks after the customer or are they a small bullion company.   Can you imagine if I have to go to the small claims with a bullion company

Maybe  BBP are thinking that if they refund you, you may end up with the coin too.

I agree with your ebay escalation to keep the pressure on but its best to get the coin instead of a refund as its below scrap.

Whoever has signed for it may claim theyve binned the parcel (but sold/kept it)

They are taking far too long to resolve this.  They chose to use a cheaper service so they can make larger margins in which case they should factor in this kind of scenario.

They should have sorted it all out with yourself first and then made their claim with Royal Mail.

I've only ever made a few purchases from them in the past but they are now right down the very very bottom of list of who to use.

I have now got a refund:D, I know it was cheaper at £174 but with all the time I have had to put into getting the issue resolved its probably cost over £250 a high price for a Sovereign.

I very rarely buy one Sovereign at a time as the postage is to high. I will not buy from BBP again.

Good. A satisfactory result! Don't be too hard on BBP though...this was an 'extra-ordinary' sales day for them and they were probably unprepared for such activity. They may not have known about the Ebay offer?

There is an issue with their customer service however. As morezone said, deal with the customer first then sort out the problem.Their postal service should be clear too.

Glad you got refunded.
