  1. Welcome aboard a friendly forum. There is much to learn from people here and there is a great sale section and loads of useful discussions to be found using search Best Dicker
  2. Having worked in investment banks for my entire career, I don’t give advice. What I can tell you is that trading complex products like CFD’s is likely to lose you money unless you have the smarts to build models. If you are looking for much safer Investments, paethaps start with research into 3-5 companies in which you can buy stock and then invest. Best Dicker
  3. Hi, Gold is highly liquid, well priced and if you are thinking about making a turn on buying and selling gold or silver you may be disappointed. People don’t sell gold cheaply, not can you sell at a great deal over spot unless the market moves. Gold works best as a mechanism to preserve wealth over the long term. Best Dicker
  4. I was working for a German investment bank in 1998 / 1999 when they 'fessed up to finding large number of gold bars that were Nazi in origin. I cant remember if it was EUR60M or EUR200M in value but it was a lot for the bank to have 'found' after all those years. The same bank regularly published 'from the archive', but curiously the archives from 1939 - 1945 were never explored or published. I attach an article from the Bank of England internal magazine from 1997. Worth a read. Best DickerOld Lady article on Nazi Gold.pdf
  5. Even the flattened denticle under the 7 is the same!
  6. Here is my 1857.... Our coins are very similar: - 8 appears to be somewhat undersized - 5 is over a 5 or a 3 - The 7 in both of our coins appears to have something going on at the top left of the 7 Best Dicker

    NGC sold to Blackrock

Usually when there is a private equity purchase, the company has unrealised potential for growth. Blackstone will likely inject cash and their own people to drive the business to new markets and higher growth in existing markets.
  8. I agree, this coin and its value tell you a great deal about the price of the recent engraver series…..controversial, but probably true.

    Fed up with eBay

I messaged the seller. This is what he said before pulling the listing…… He said he bought it “5 months ago from a legit seller” Make your own minds up!
  10. Definitely the auction house from what I have seen. My local well respected auction house definitely does the description but with background from the seller. The are far from coin specialists so you get for example “4 Victoria sovereigns” bundled. Some may be Shields others G&D. A lot of people go in to look at the coins and make their own judgements.
  11. My guess is that it is 5 over 5. Looks identical to the one I have. Best Dicker
  12. Just to add - just looked at my notebook. The one that went through auction was a Douro wreck sovereign.
  13. I have one that is probably AU59/MS60. Seen another one go through auction but at a much lower grade. Suspect not super rare.
  14. I have one of these. Here is another. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/133787468509 Best Dicker

    Gold stackers!

A reasonable question. Certainly, I have stopped buying silver from the EU / U.K. dealers. I still buy the occasional coin or two from the forum or nice Morgan dollars but 20pct vat makes it deeply unappealing. Best Dicker

    Fed up with eBay

Most amusing @AndrewSL76 Sometimes I see gold coins with such little detail (i.e. counterfeits) advertised as 'shipwreck condition'. This annoys me greatly as being at the bottom of the sea for hundreds of years, in most cases does not damage coins. This serves as a superb example..... https://pirategoldcoins.myshopify.com/collections/mexican-gold-from-shipwrecks-pirate-gold-coins/products/mexico-1715-fleet-shipwreck-royal-like-8-escudos-1714-date-on-reverse-treasure Best Dicker

    Fed up with eBay

If you want a laugh - look at this horror story. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164687180704?hash=item26581ef3a0:g:2dQAAOSw1Pxe4hH3

    Fed up with eBay

I forgot to post on this thread - I saw a genuinely interesting coin on ebay which was no doubt genuine in the photograph - as usual I looked at what else the seller was selling. In between a few high grade coins priced at GBP750 there was also a couple of counterfeit coins that were so blindingly obvious that a child would have spotted them. It really is hard to fathom if people lack the experience and knowledge to spot a clear counterfeit or are simply trying it on. I suspect the worst! Best Dicker
  19. I see them now and again on ebay. As usual with ebay there is language like 'you need to test it yourself to prove it is 925'. In my book, this means it isn't. I have watched a couple of sales and they don't sell well. Best Dicker
  20. Rather like the Hoover BA airline tickets. Marketing vs reality. If you are going to give away halo prizes, make sure they are so halo that it makes the press, if you deliver junk, expect terrible press. I bought my first car from someone who had won it in an Andrex completion - a golden ticket in a toilet roll in 1991. I bought the car from her and she gave me the local newspaper article, and was still buzzing with the win 18 months later.
  21. I am not a 'flipper' and don't collect many proofs so do not order from the RM. I also dislike being part of a feeding frenzy when buying coins for many thousands of pounds - a lottery might be fairer It makes collecting Shield Sovs, Morgans, Early Australian and Early US PM coins seem much more pleasurable! Best Dicker
  22. Indeed, poor product offering in my view. Tagging to any occasion possible. I am not keen on the boxes in any case! Best Dicker
  23. Scraping the bottom of the barrel as far as I am concerned. Limited to 100 sets…. One would be better buying these privately, getting a box made by Alun and saving about £450 https://www.royalmint.com/duke-of-edinburgh/HRH-The-Prince-Philip-Duke-of-Edinburgh-Sovereign-Set-1921-2021/
  24. Interesting - I am looking forward to returning to the US and going to dealership Ca, Az and Tx. I will be looking for interesting Morgan’s and early gold rush coins. Best Dicket
