  1. Wyon also did a rather good engraving to celebrate Victoria’s visit to the Corporation of London. One thing I think that Wyon was especially good at was the framing and sizing of designs within the coin. He does not seek to fill the entire coin, but frame his engravings really rather well. 2. I wonder if we might get a rehash of the 1 Mohur… https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces25925.html
  3. I don’t buy from them but have seen quite a few for sale on eBay. What makes me laugh is that many seem to come with an A5 RM card, laser printed with a description of the historic coin. On quite a few I have seen the printing is not straight where the card has not been loaded into the laser printer straight. Hopeless that they send stuff like this out. Best Dicker
  4. Interesting bar. When I was last in Thailand, my wife took me in a tedious shopping trip to an upmarket shopping centre. I found a jewellery store that has a few small ingots in the window, but I couldn’t get them to sell me one for love or money! Naturally they were desperate to sell my wife very expensive jewellery with stones as vast vast markups. Shame because the little ingots were quite attractive with a small tree on them! Best Dicker
  5. @Dan12345 It’s good to share pics and always feel free to post up pics of coins you are thinking of buying. People are pretty generous with warning of coins look ok or not. It’s not flawproof is helpful! Cheers Dicker
  6. Hi Dan, No problem at all - it is worth perhaps getting a graded example as a reference that you can judge other purchases against. I would personally steer clear of eBay as there are coins for sale there that I suspect very high grade counterfeits as well as the obvious ones. The below article is worth a read - without looking at this coin under Magnification, I would would not be able to tell it was counterfeit. 7. Hi Dan, I am afraid they all look counterfeit to me. Take the first coin as an example - you just don't see massive splodges of metal on minted Morgans as per the below I have cut out. The other coins all have issues as far as I can see... The colour looks off The weight is also way off - a dead giveaway. I have a slick Morgan with almost no detail left and this comes in at 25.64g - yours are definitely too light The magnet test works on the steel counterfeits but I have read that other non-magnetic metals are now being used The other coins all have issues as far as I can see... I am not the forums Morgan Dollar expert, but I have bought a >200 hundred for my collection - the majority graded while working / travelling in the US over the years - the majority being PCGS / NCG graded and spent time examine them for VAM errors under microscopes. Other TSF members views more than welcome! Best Dicker From the ordering of your pictures I think you have: 1904 - S 1894 - CC 1888 - No Mint Mark - Therefore Philadelphia 1893 S The dates and mintmark are significant because in 3/4 cases represent coins that are rare / high value / hard to get hold of...or don't exist 1904 - S - Sought after and is noted as a key issue in Bowers book. It is relatively low mintage. This is not easy to find.... 1894 - CC - No Morgans were minted at the Carson City mint in 1894 1888 - Relatively common 1893 S - Rare and very highly sought after. If yours was genuine even in that condition I would guess it would be worth £2000 or more
  8. Good stuff. If you are looking to buy more Morgan’s, particularly graded ones, it might be worth looking at US dealers and having them imported and paying the tax. The stock of Morgans in the U.K. is relatively small whereas US dealers have very extensive stock of NGC / PCGS coins. I don’t have a relationship the following shop but the prices vs grades show the disparity of UK pricing and supply vs US. http://portsmouthcoinshop.com/product-category/large-dollar/ Best Dicker
  9. Hi Dan I always suggest getting “Morgan Silver Dollars” by Q David Bowers. A wealth of information within this book. When you mention state, I think you mean Mint. This is signified by a mint mark O / S / CC etc or lack thereof underneath the Eagle just above the D and O of DOLLAR. Just be careful there are a *great deal* of counterfeits out there especially on eBay. Most are poor copies but there are some exceptional counterfeits out there. Best Dicker
  10. Hi Dan Get it tested if you are not sure but these sell on Chinese websites for around a pound….which means it’s unlikely to contain silver. Best Dicker
  11. Hi @Dan12345 I am pretty sure yours is what people on ebay euphemistically refer to as 'Fantasy pieces' or more accurately a counterfeit. It appears to be cast and artificially aged, with what look like pop marks on various areas of the coin and a pretty unusual date! Best Dicker
  12. It is an interesting one. The depiction of Victoria on the Gothic Crown is for me the most attractive part of the coin. Replacing this image would for me make the coin less attractive. Best Dicker
  13. Good guess - would Victoria have to be replaced with Elizabeth however? Best Dicker
  14. High on the acquisition list. I remember trading somewhere that this was only spotted in the 1970’s. Best Dicker
  15. One of the many reasons I prefer buying Shields at a premium especially when they are “unusual” or Gillicks to stack. Proof Silver and Gold is a pain for me…. Best Dicker
  16. Quite. Without the 50k, I would be happy with one in any condition. I have a number of Melbourne Half Sovereigns - some rare dates and they are very circulated. Beggars can’t be choosers 🙂
  17. For me, anything above MS63… But as ever with grades, I would have to buy the coin not the grade. Happily go for a lower grade coin if it had more eye appeal. Best Dicker
  18. Good stuff! Keep an eye on it - I will keep posting on that thread with some of my findings. One item that has always interested me on another thread is an 1880 Half Sovereign - looked genuine and one has been through London Coin Auctions but it is not listed in Marsh. Best Dicker
  19. Let me add a cross link…there are a fair number of interesting items not in Marsh on the other page…. Best Dicker
  20. I am working my way through photographing and will be adding them to the Sovereign Overdate and Varieties thread. Best Dicker
  21. I have a 5 other die numbers on half Sovs that are not noted here or in Marsh....
  22. I purchased from an on-line auction of numismatic coins a few times last year, and have chosen not to again. I am explicitly not naming which one or in which country but what I saw was a little odd in a couple of instances. I am steering clear for the foreseeable future....where Sovs are concerned US Coins didn't behave as oddly......from what I could see anyway. Best Dicker
