Agreed, but the odd holiday or treat in retirement on the back of saving from something that’s nice to hold in your hand in the meantime would be satisfying.

That's fractional coins with a decent premium.

The Columbian government plan on recovering billions from the "holy grail of shipwrecks", the San Jose, a Spanish treasure ship sunk in 1708.

How much are you willing to spend, I have a pre loved heavy guage celtic warriors bangle, but it is more exspensive than your second one pictured. We have it listed for £229 but would accept less to a forum member.

    Definitely a nice pick up.
I have a 1933 maundy set, just so that I can honestly say that I have a 1933 penny (UK numismatists will understand!)
Thankfully that set only owes me less than 20% of £900.

I think they'll come up from tome to time, just keep your eyes on them. I couldn't bother and just overpaid a dealer, and I have no regrets at all because I will not get the money back anyway

Agreed- the least I’ve seen is £900 with fees, I kicked myself for not purchasing.  More usually this set between £1000 and £1200.

Nice pick up.  This particular set is sought after- I’ve been an underbidder many times on a 1953 set- difficult to find under £900.

    1953 Maundy set.
Some of the most accessible of all legacy coins.
Legacy coins accoring to myself of course...
These are probably the only coins struck in silver in 1953 except for one single pattern crown. This is the last year and only year in QEII's reign when BRITT: OMN: was included in the legend. When the scripts were introduced the then Prime Minister Gladstone pointed out that, for a Latin abbreviation ending with -T, the T should be doubled. Gladstone was educated at Eton and then ChCh, Oxford (alas I didn't get there) and read classics and maths.
The post-war economy was critically disrupted, and precious metals were completely withdrawn from the daily life of an average Briton. Indeed, even the coronation proof sets of 1953 ware made of base metals. These being perhaps the only affordable precious metal coins of the year. Other PM coins of 1953 include the legendary pattern sovereigns, and anything in that range will fetch high six-digits or above.
The Maundy are some of the most collectible of British coinage no doubt. They're not rare or particularly expensive, but they can often be found in good condition as they were never intended for circulation, and they run continiously from Charles II making them good starting point for a type run.
The coins came with some very ugly toning and dark tarrish substance around the letters, so I gave them a proper restoration. I'll leave them outside in a damp place hoping some pleasant tone would redevelop over time.

I think, and given the scenario you set out-  you’ve probably stacked plenty of bullion in case of a SHTF scenario if you did need to sell, so in this scenario why not purchase a really nice high grade Sovereign.

High grade historic coins will always find buyer, no matter if you buy Gold or Silver, a Milled or Hammered coin.  Long term, if you buy the right coin, your investment will trump any 1oz bullion purchase you make now.  Taking the leap of faith will be your biggest obstacle.
