The Columbian government plan on recovering billions from the "holy grail of shipwrecks", the San Jose, a Spanish treasure ship sunk in 1708.

I would think that none of this will hit the open market.  It’s hard for a government to sell it off without looking like looters.

However will be fascinating to see what happens merges from the deep. No doubt in my mind that there will be coins never previously identified.

Found this from your last topic - ‘Shipwrecks found off the Colombian coast’  7 June 2022… @Booky586

As usual, treasure ships cause controversy as to ownership!  Archeological or Economic recovery? But Greed always wins….!

Whoever stole the gold   last time before it sank?

would love to see the coins.

You can see there's a lot of parties that could have a claim to the prize.

It wouldn't have been a problem if the British navy had captured the galleon instead of sinking it! 😀

That's more vigo or lima or whatever that battle was. Could've been nice but still with a price tag sky high

If we do the right thing this time, we might have to do the right thing again next time.

Interesting contrast from the same entities claiming that promissory notes are real money, the others are pet rocks😅

Off topic but have you seen any gold salvaged from P&O Steamer Egypt. I have a piece just at NGC but going back as the clowns can't spell correctly on the slab 😆

No- I have not.  There is a hard to find book about the recovery of treasure from the Egypt but I have not been able to find a copy, let alone a gold coin!

The San Jose wreck may still be a little while off being salvaged….. there have been legal issues around salvage companies and countries around ownership, salvage rights etc. They may salvage whilst this all going on, or may have to wait🤔😮

Doesn't look like seawater damage to be honest. There are so many gold coins from Duoro all looking pristine.

This one's from the Douro and isn't so pristine, I guess seawater damage comes in different stages......

I think that's soil and other sticky stuff on the sea bed which can be removed. Seawater really shouldn't erode gold, but from the picture it seems there's a lot of rust' i.e. iron, which probably forms a battery of some sort and destroys it. I'd also say the coin in picture can be somewhat restored.

If we do the right thing this time, we might have to do the right thing again next time.

Do you get to stipulate exactly what you want on the label? Looks like NGC has missed out  big chunks, not just spelling!
A nice label would look good. Seen different ones for the RMSDouro, like this one for example….

A friend graded it for me but I will try getting more info on the label as I agree I would like abit more. Think I will leave the natural look aswel as it looks more authetic like treasure 😬

Fascinating

For the numismatists here, is this a 22 carat coin?

If so, wouldn't we expect some damage eventually to the copper content?

A pure gold coin surely would remain intact for centuries in sea water - in fact forever, right?

Older sovereigns had very little copper content compared with the modern sovereigns of today.
