Olivard reacted to Bratnia in The 25th anniversary of 'Brown's Bottom'
To help kickstart the new Euro. In fairness the money to buy Euros had to come from somewhere and he likely opined that as gold had gone nowhere for a couple of decades, declined in both nominal and real terms, expected that to perhaps continue. Rules being rules perhaps dictated the daft manner in which that gold was sold. Central Banks aren't free to just dump gold into the markets - there are rules that have to be adhered to. Once the 2000's gold rise occurred only then did the apparent good choice flip to having been a poor choice. Easy with hindsight to highlight what alternative could have been used instead to far greater benefit/effect, pretty much impossible at the time to have such foresight.

Olivard reacted to westminstrel in New coins coming soon.
I think the highest mintage they’ve done for an SotD (since 2017) was 1817 for the 2017 200th Anniversary of the Sovereign.
Next highest was 1500 for the Withdrawal from the EU SotD.
Others have been in the 1200-1250 range.
Then the 650-850 range.

Any idea on mintage? That's often the key to how valuable/popular a SoTD is.

@westminstrel I received the email shown below from The Coin Connection.
D Day Strike on the Day Sovereign
On the 6th of June, the mint is releasing a Strike on the Day Sovereign to commemorate the 80th Anniversary.
I am not allowed to give you any further details. However, I think this will be very popular, as the king is poorly.
I have to let the mint know how many I would like to order, and once confirmed, I will be able to confirm your order.
Prices:
£850 for boxed (shipping added to overseas destinations)
£950 for MS70 (shipping added to overseas destinations)
Please let know by Sunday 28th April
Many thanks and hear from you soon

Personally, capsules for everything.
I am a custodian, not an owner, and as such wish to preserve condition for the next owner(s)

Olivard reacted to westminstrel in Gazette Proclamation - Waterloo Medal (Great Engravers 2-coin set?)
Definitely think the gold will be the more appealing version to get because it hasn’t been done in 99.99% gold ever before.
But how many can afford 2x 2oz gold Proof coins?
Depending on mintage, it could be a really desirable modern rarity, or end up being just another expensive Proof gold coin.

I don't know how I feel about being a passenger in a horse drawn carriage. I'm used to the exhaust pipe being situated behind where I'm sat, not in front of me. 😁

Olivard got a reaction from westminstrel in SoTD / BU sovereign 2024?
I was expecting a higher price given the gold price rise recently. Think they charged £850 last year for the birthday SotD - which BBP still have 5 left and BCC are selling at a £55 discount. Looks like RM have decided the price has reached saturation point.
Thanks for the news.

Well! Whoever had their money on a D-Day SOTD sovereign were correct! I've just received this from a dealer:

Olivard reacted to westminstrel in Royal Mint new release "city views"
Sovereign Rarities, in their advertising, states they are:
“… thrilled to present the new City Views series, created in partnership with the Royal Mint”.
Not sure what it means, but it’s interesting. 🙂

RM don't seem to mind appearing ridiculous as long as they can make money.

D Day. One or two private mints have jumped on this bandwagon and RM look like they are joining them. SotD could be part of the offering.

I can't see them missing out on the income from at least one SotD regardless of the gold price.
