This thread has really taken some wild turns over the last week.  It started with who is in, who likes the coin, what set, how many, etc.  The folks looking for a quick profit jumped in with debates on prices, mintage, the search for only 70’s, and complaints on RM service and quality.  Finally politics reared it’s ugliness with debates on KC III.
Let’s all take a deep breath and realize what we are talking about - a coin.  That’s all.  If you like it, jump in.  If you don’t or you don’t agree with the government, the prices, mintage, package, mintage limit ….don’t buy the coin or deal with the RM.
I’m a collector who loves his collection - some are perfect, some have flaws, but in the end I bought them because I liked them.  It’s a chance to travel back in time and hold something that was part of someone’s life - maybe they carried it in a war, or on their wedding day.  Some are worth a bunch, some just look good to me.  
 
It’s a hobby (definitely an expensive one) but not my retirement plan and not worth raising my blood pressure over.  Happy hunting for your treasures.

My point was if Charles’s coins aren’t as popular as QE II’s, and therefore don’t sell out, the actual mintages could end up being lower than the Jubilee mintages.
As for rarity vs popularity… the former is objective, factual, and unchanging; the latter is subjective and fluctuating.

This is exactly what people said of the 1989 sovereign at its release.
Now look at how well it is doing.
The Platinum Jubilee proof sovereign of most denominations didn’t immediately sell out in November 2021. It took a few days.
I agree with your statement that the late Queen was special. But so is this new release of Charles III sovereigns.
Why?
He was Britain’s longest Prince of Wales.
He’s also Britain’s oldest ‘ever’ monarch, by age, to be crowned.
He also started The Princes Trust which has done great things.
He’s also a great advocate against climate change.
He sadly won’t likely see any significant Jubilees which means, no special releases. As we have seen many of as of late.
Charles III’s reign may be seen as Edward VII’s reign.
In the coming years, we’ll go back to the usual, standard George and Dragon reverse with an uncrowned King sovereign.
You’re skipping an opportunity to own a piece of history because of personal opinion.
Now, remind me again, how are 1902 Edward VII Matt proof sovereigns doing?

Sorry to necro-bump a old thread, but thought that better than the separation of a new thread.
Is same series gold not the same as for shares when selling the same stock, where tax reporting is based on the average costs rather than the prices paid for individual shares (gold coins)?
Buy three American Eagle one ounce gold coins at different times for £1000, £1200, £1300. Average price paid £1200. Sell one for £1200 and zero capital gain/loss, rather than being able to say you sold the one costing £1300 and made a £100 capital loss; Or alternatively saying you sold the one that cost £1000 and made a £100 capital gain.
Can't find anything in the HMRC manuals about that, but I didn't look that intensely. I guess even if not documented that push come to shove and HMRC would apply what worked in its favour.
Somewhat similar to if you FX exchanged Pounds for dollars at different times. Apply the average FX rate paid if/when converted back to Pounds again to identify the actual gain or loss, you wouldn't instead identify individual notes exchanged by their year/serial number.
Different series of coins and yes, distinctly different. Similar to if FX exchanging for US dollars and Euro's at multiple/different times. Two separate average price paid values for working out capital gains/losses when 'sold'.
If not recorded and reported correctly and you were investigated and found to have done things wrong I imagine the penalties could be harsh, even though you might not have been intentionally evading tax, found guilty of tax evasion and at risk of having (gold and other) assets confiscated on the basis of having been the proceeds from illicit activities.

I wouldn’t consider myself a fan of the CIII portrait/coins. However, certainly in comparison to his mother, he’s not going to be around very long. Therefore almost by default, should these not become more sought after in the years to come due to the limited number of runs with his face and funny looking hat on?

And that current sentiment is exactly what might create rarity of these coins in the future.
In 20 years’ time, will numismatists really care whether Charles was popular or well liked? I doubt it. I expect, just like numismatists (or collectors of anything!) have for decades, they’ll care about whether a coin is rare or not. Nothing else will truly matter.

It's hard to put into words exactly, but to anyone who has handled lots of coins or seen plenty of genuine ones, the fake looks like a clip art of sorts.
The real coins have a depth to the strike, the details are made by varying the relief in areas. The fake looks like all modern coins of very low relief where the detail is made by adding in lots of lines into the design. Lines which give hair detail that Edward coins really shouldn't have.

More worrying for me is not the hair, but the lettering on obverse, where is written 
EDWARDVS VII DEI:GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX FEF:DEF: IND: IMP: instead
EDWARDVS VII D:G: BRITT: OMN: REX F:D: IND: IMP:.
 
The lettering on the coin from Ebay is identical a on the double sovereign obverse.

Edward is near enough bald. That fake has him having plenty of hair. George VI fake is even worse.  Every one who buys sovereigns should look at plenty of photos of what the real coins should look like. Look at also the rim of the fakes, completely different.

This is a Tag Heure Formula 1 watch with blue dial and stainless steel bezel.  Model CAZ101K.  It has all the original box and receipt showing where it was purchased. This retails new for £1700. Two years old but had no use as can be seen in photos.  I have put a hold on it at my local dealer.  Available for £950.

We do deal with the human element and both the NGC and PCGS get it wrong at times, PCGS are struggling with a number of issues due to internal changes. 
 
I’ve had coins labeled wrong recently, I track my submission and can download images of the coins and got them to change it. 
 
I’ve submitted a coin with the wrong label (only one) and I held my hand up did not BS anyone and got it sorted. 
 
If coins are out of alignment they do fix it, had this with my own £5 sov, for me I will work closely with the grading company rather than just kicking off like a brat when something is not right, where I have had issues the NGC have always helped and put right, this is where having a submission office you can go into a talk with them is a real benefit for me. 

I'm your local NGC grading expert, you are asking a very wide question thats very difficult to answer due to endless options.  
Which ones to use?  The main two theres more but will use NGC and PCGS in this explanation.  This depends on several factors for you to consider where are you based, where are you buying and sell your coins.    
NGC has dominated North America, UK and many parts of the Europe, where PCGS is far more popular in the East Asia and Australia.  
2 where the submissions office, for me this was the killer question.  NGC have an office in London that I visit 2-3 times per month and can post within the country using RMSD.  closest PCGS is based in Paris no way was I shipping my coins outside the UK only for those lovely people to block the ports, air traffic control and I can't get my coins back for months......Nothing against the French honestly.
Talking of months its widely known PCGS are having issues and it's taking 6-7 months in some cases to get coins returned, this is not always the case but the sorts of times I'm hearing from friends who use them. 
Cost?.....what coin, what value, what label, what services, everything costs. a modern proof or bullion post 1965 with NGC conservation id £65 not loads.  Some coins can cost hundreds to "slab" and conserve due to the value of the coin.

I would say the sigma is good on certain things, but not fool proof.  To be honest I was a little embarrassed when I tested the fake in the original owner's presence. We both knew it was fake and when it registered in the brackets straight away while in the blister pack. It was only while using the wands after removing from pack, the test picked up that it was not real. 
Like I said, most people would never remove from the pack and this is what these scammers depend on to get away with it. This person had payed £500 for it. Luckily he got his money back. The scammer wanted the bar back, but he told them, that it is illegal to post fake stuff through the post and so the scammer refunded his money and now I have it.

I will wait for the 5 coin set to arrive before I decide what to do, but at least one is going back for a refund. I'm so fed up with how they handled a replacement on the last issue like this and I don't want to have to go through it again.
