Wow - I do wonder sometimes what goes through the minds of the people that propose some of these collections and what makes them think they will do well.

The local shops selling gold here just sell St Helena tat and normal sovs for £470+ each.
It's like those posts with the charity shop finds where their local ones have insanely good stuff, and yours are just granny clothes and some old PS3 games
I find that with a lot of coin/PM stores in the UK. They really do struggle to beat HGM's best-value sovereigns. I did happen across one in Brighton a while ago that was selling Gillicks (with good toning) for just £2 extra than HGM's best-values though so was very happy with that.

Does that really matter on this coin?
Imo no - I don't think these are going to be hard to sell even with (minor) issues. You might get a bit less than one in perfect condition but those are likely few and far between. It will certainly be interesting to see what some of these are graded at.

In the U.S., we don't have all these QC issues with the U.S. Mint. The coins they produce may not be all MS or PF 70s, but we don't see the glaring and numerous QC issues we're seeing from the RM. The U.S. Mint doesn't produce as many different coins as the RM, but mintages of each coin are very large. I think the RM is biting off more than it can chew with continuous new releases that they can't keep up with. Now, their goal does not seem to be quality but rather get as many out the door as possible. Apparently, all the returns are not bothering them. But, if they spent more resources on QC before the coins leave the mint, they would be able to spend less time and money handling all the returns plus irate customer complaints.
The odds are though that the sales they make from all of these releases exceed the money they lose via QC returns/replacements. I would say that it is likely a calculated decision for the business which honestly makes it worse as it means that an element of that strategy is to just sell off their reputation for short-term gain.

dont think they will be many top scoring coins.
Unsure about that. I've seen far fewer people pointing out issues with these coins versus something recent like the Memorial Proofs.

SOTD has arrived - mark on centre right of portrait side FFS

My first issue with RM for quality ive been lucky thus far until now.
What do folk think? shall i return or keep?
Surely a "strike on the day" cant be restruck for a replacement on another day ?
Would i just get a refund ???? and lose the chance of this coin - thanks
Have you tried air dusting it off? I had something like this with one of my Memorial Proofs & it came right off. Whenever I go about exchanging I like to call TRM's customer service to see what their stance on it is & if they have any leftover stock. Obviously, the risk is that you get something that somebody else returned. They'll probably be arsey about it though because it's technically BU. Tricky one, but would definitely resell it privately rather than refund it if you decide to go that route. For what it's worth, I reckon keep it even if it's a mark rather than a fibre.

One thing that I do find interesting is the little 'QC' sticker. I've never seen that before. New policy to improve quality control, perhaps?

Which one of you tampered with the colour grading? 😏
What is the actual colour of the SotD - is it more yellow or tending towards rose gold?
Wishful thinking! 😆
Considering I couldn't even be arsed to remove the black fibers from the box off of the capsule before taking a photo - I'm sure you can guess who the culprit is...
Here is a side-by-side with a Bullion Memorial sovereign + 1oz King Arthur Bullion for comparison:

Interesting, anyone know why they removed it?
4 minutes ago, SeverinDigsSovereigns said:It was added in 1887 to mark Queen Victoria's golden jubilee. I think with the tonnes of George V sovereigns that survive the ones with streamers are more classic than the original without. Interestingly it's only removed from one sovereign, and remains on £5 and £2.
Yeah as @SeverinDigsSovereigns said, I believe it has been switched back and forth over the years. The older designs also have the broken spear, whereas sovereigns after 1821 (?) have Saint George's sword, Ascalon, instead.

Just noticed there's no tail on the helmet, has this been removed on newer sovs?
If I recall correctly it was removed from the design from 2009 onwards.

And separately, the Memorial Sovereigns are also back on sale. 🫠
I wonder if the person who managed this launch has their head on a spike by now, because it really is the gift that keeps on giving.

I've been changing my mind every day about this 1oz gold. Very unsure as to how it'll perform in the years to come, but I guess we might see a bit of an indication of interest tomorrow. Who knows, though... 🤔
London Coin Fair - worth going?
in General Precious Metals
Posted · Edited by BOOLIAN
Hi all,
With the London Coin Fair only a few weeks away, what are people's thoughts who have attended before? Worth going out of your way to attend if you are exclusively interested in gold? Any bargains or just a nice event to see what is out there?
Thanks!
