There is a story of hanging a monkey in Hartlepool.
It is said to have occurred during the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th century
The story goes that a French ship was wrecked off the coast of Hartlepool, a town in northeast England.
The only survivor was a monkey, dressed in a French naval uniform, which was mistaken by the locals for a French spy.
Being unfamiliar with what a Frenchman looked like, the townspeople concluded that the monkey must be a Frenchman.
The monkey was then put on trial by the townspeople and subsequently sentenced to death by hanging.
It is said that the monkey was hanged on the beach or from the mast of the wrecked ship.
The story of the Hartlepool monkey has become a part of local folklore and has been retold in various forms over the years.
It is often used as a humorous anecdote to illustrate the supposed ignorance or gullibility of the townspeople.

That’s nothing! The town of Middleton in Manchester has a pub named “The Moonraker” or similar. Named not after the James Bond film but after the dumb locals who, on a full moon 🌝 got out their garden rakes to try to make the demon moon in the local pond go away 🤦♂️
Middletonian’s are known as Moonrakers to older folk in Manchester 😂
Muppets! Must go Back to the 1500’s this story but it stuck.

It's very interesting what they have done with this. The gem of releases like this has to be the 2022 jubilee pattern set, wasn't instantly a hit but sets like these will disappear into long term collections.
I would love to see the matt proof £5 just to see if it looks any different from a matt BU £5.
Worth a punt from someone who's got a spare 40k or so they don't need.
