I'm actually something of a fan of trying to waste these guys time. Usually the scam will take you through to a call centre and they'll try to persuade you to give them info or type in something so they can grab your computer remotely. I put them on speaker phone at my desk while I'm working on something else and just take ages to do what they tell me. Up to the crucial point that something they do may be damaging, then just change the topic or muck about.

i was rung this week and was told that my National Insurance number was about to be terminated as it was suspected it had been used in a fraud. i was to press 1 and would be redirected to someone or other - the police or something. i clicked it off. i did wonder what would be at the other end if i had clicked 1 - might be a £10 a minute premium phone number so always better to click off.

I just had an email back from RM bullion and they say that any item that is listed as "no longer available " this states this item will no longer be struck.
Sounds like they will no longer be striking or listing the coin after filling their current dealer orders

Sounds good, if we have enough notice before a trip we might be able to time it well.
Or, we just drop everything and shoot up if you get a golden pair in!

Are the "tilted" people the ones who lean over backwards to be helpful? 🙂...
or who have a little list?
On a slighly more serious note: "Whether people get conned in paying over the odds IMO if their fault" Yes strictly speaking it is, but every week we get offered modern issue coins that people have bought from Coin Marketing Companies, knowing little or nothing about coins. Our staff and I do feel a lot of sympathy for them, along with frustration, and some anger, that they have been ripped-off, usually by people who also know little or nothing about coins. Typically the victims are older, and use print media more than online. We often have to try and break the bad news to them as gently as possible, often they have realised before they get to us, which makes our job a little easier.
Quite often, we end up sourcing some interesting modern issues, including low mintage, but from Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Gibraltar, Tristan da Cunha, etc. These require time, effort, and patience to re-market, and do not have the secondary market appeal that most UK or other major countries' coins do.
When I write "Coin Marketing Companies", I half expect predictive text to make an indecent suggestion which I would not entirely disagree with! 🙂

Fair enough. You love it because you get a nice cheap but of gold at spot price and can put up with a bit of shill from their salesmen. But remember, we are not their target audience. Those phone calls and marketing leaflets are aimed at those who know absolutely nothing about gold collecting whatsoever. They are the more elderly with cash to spare. They offer their proof coins at exorbitant prices on the basis of them being a "great investment and something you can pass on to the Grandchildren" (The exact words that were spoken to me by one of their salesmen.
My mothed's parther, who is 88, gets almost weekly flyers off them, offering great deals on coins, issued against remote islands like Tristan da Cunha, for many times the intrinsic value and with hardly any resale value, like £300 silver proof piedfort coins I bought on ebay second hand for £100. Great investment indeed. Fortunately, he had the common sense to say no.
So yes, it might be good for us, but I bet that for every sovereign sold to us, another is being soldnto somebody totally unaware that they are about to become a target for what is effectively a marketing scam.

You could try asking Jubilee Mint how and where they obtained your telephone number and / or other details. In writing would be better than by telephone.
I believe that Harrington & Byrne is owned and run by ex Westminster employees, similarly Jubilee Mint, CPM (Coin Portfolio Management). Most of these are clustered around Bournemouth or Poole in Dorset, although H&B show a Mayfair London address.
The misleadingly named London Mint Office are not a mint, but a subsidiary of Samlerhuset Group, the biggest coin marketing company in Europe.
Don't confuse London Mint Office with the London Mint or the Royal Mint.
Harrington & Byrne recently did a leaflet drop offering. The leaflet gives the impression that it is an official document of some kind, headed "National Household Notification". It takes quite some time to discover that the issuing authority is Alderney in the Channel Islands. Most casual readers will quite reasonably assume that it is an official United Kingdom coin issue. Many TSF members will probably know that I dislike misleading advertising.

Thanks for explaining the economics. It felt like that was the plan, just poorly executed (e.g. displaying the offer price and the usual price same page). Reassuring to know you'd be inclined to predict all would be well.

I have never known them fail to honour their loss-leader deal, after all, they make these offers in full knowledge thay they make a loss on the first sale. It is their cost of getting you onto their database, and hopefully onto their mailing list.

MetalsMan reacted to MythicQuale in Metals vulnerable to staining/tarnishing ordered by least to most resistant?
Out of silver, gold, palladium, iridium, platinum, titanium, stainless steel, aluminum, chromium, and rhodium (maybe chuck in brass, tungsten, osmium and copper for fun), can anyone help list these metals in order of susceptibility to corrosion, staining, rusting, and tarnishing for long term storage in 'average' air?
I'd love to know how they all compare against each other and it may influence my own storage of some of these metals.
Here's six to get started. I'd love know where the others fit in. Warning, there may be errors in the ordering as I did very little research to obtain these!
Metals listed by least to most resistant to corrosion:
Iridium. Notes: "Iridium is the most corrosion-resistant material known. " (source)
Platinum: This is apparently lower in reactivity than gold (source). However I don't think "reactivity" necessarily equates to "most likely to rust" etc.
    Gold
    Silver
    Copper
    Aluminum
Osmium. Notes: "Osmium is the hardest of the group and has the highest melting point, but its ready oxidation is a limitation." (source)
