When I started stacking, it was with Silver because that’s all I had the budget for. When I’ve earned more, I’ve bought gold - when I’ve earned less, I’ve bought silver again… and when it goes quiet as it has lately - I sell some to keep afloat 🤷🏻‍♂️
The size of coins / bars has only mattered (indirectly) when I’m buying - I’ve got X amount  - what will that get me?

    I’d suspect there’s a fair few in a similar position 🤔

    Everyone's stacking journey is different.
Mine, I just love knowing I've converted some fiat £ debt tokens to the yellow metal each month, dont stress the maths.
I've more gold this month, than I did last month.
I'm therefore richer/fatter as my gold grammes total goes up, than I was last month
    ( or gold kg's in @James32 case )
If I get morbidly obese in gold,I'll worry about it when it happens. First world problems

I don't think people will be buying smaller, the " average Joe " will be buying the sweet spot coins, 1/4oz / sovereign but just buy them less often now due to cost

I'm probably repeating what others have said, but fractional gold will always be liquid and, unless you are forced to sell for spot (or 97% 😟), the premium you pay at purchase will generally be recouped at sale.
One ounce coins have the lowest premium but unless you plan to liquidate at a dealer, you may struggle to find a buyer as the gold price increases. I was drawn to this route but soon changed tack as I found I was was getting too many cheeky offers.
I suggest smaller gold coins have to rise in popularity.
A few years ago, a sovereign was £200, now a half sovereign is £200. An ounce was £800 and now 1/2 ounce is £800. This is because our fiat currency is depreciating yet our wages are not doubling to cover this. Sure, if our wages had increased 100% in the last few years, an ounce would be just as easily affordable.
    (I'm specifically talking about bullion)

It's interesting at the moment. Despite really solid performance of gold in the past month, people are paying pretty much the same price on sovereigns as they did a month ago, so premiums have been squeezed from a pretty healthy and normal level of 5% on sovereigns for example, to just about spot. Recently i saw sovereigns selling at 5% over spot at £390 faster than sovereigns selling at spot at £390 last week.
Ounces now struggle to sell at spot, but they have always been a harder sell. It's not a new thing with ounces - they have always been a bit of a stretch for most budgets and therefore not as liquid, but sovereigns struggling to sell at extremely low premiums is something I've never seen before. I think, and hope, that this is an anomaly.
Fractionals below half sovereign have always had high premiums, but there is no sign of premiums on these going still higher. In fact,  I think these again have seen premiums squeezed slightly.
I don't think it's anything to do with the price of a sovereign or an ounce being too much for the stackers' budget, rather that the recent 10% jump is being seen as an unsustainable spike and the market is adjusting slowly. If you look at the previous dip in late Sept to £1490 as being an anomalous and temporary dip, it changes the picture. In the long run, 1600 will be seen as a missed opportunity I reckon. The last 5 years has seen an increase of 70% in gold, so if that's repeated, £1600 will be a distant memory.  Can you imagine £2700 an ounce, £650 a sovereign in 2028?
So I don't think there has been a significant change towards smaller gold recently. And therefore I don't think there is more or less sense in buying any weight class over any other - this is determined by your budget. At the right premium, any bullion performs about as well as anything else over time in my experience. Sovereigns included. Sovereigns would remain my recommended medium of gold as they are usually quicker to sell than other sizes.

Scootermuppet got a reaction from LemmyMcGregor in Collectable £2 coins are they worth keeping?
£2 coins are quite a popular coin to collect, some collect just the commemoratives and some do a full date run etc - very similar to 50p coins, which happens to be my ‘thing’ ☺️
If you like them , I’d say collect them - I have a full set of circulated 50p’s and a fair chunk of the BU ones as well. I try and pick them up cheaply (or occasionally get one in change, but that’s getting rarer these days ), but if I have to pay a little more for one I don’t have then so be it - they’ll always have a value to collectors in the future.
My budget won’t stretch to collecting Sovereigns, (apart from a few nice examples tucked away as a nest egg) and I would like to get the date run of Gillicks (eventually! 😅) but I collect the 50p’s as they are a way of satisfying my inner Magpie without having to live on baked beans for extended periods 😏🤭
Not a big fan of the £2 coins myself, but have to admit there are some nice commemorative designs out there - and even the ‘super rare’ circulating ones can be had for around £30 still, so I understand… 🤔
Basically, if you like it, go for it - has to be cheaper than collecting Precious metal coins 😁

In light of present company am still a relative newcomer to this (started buying gold about 18 months ago). Settled pretty quickly on Sovereigns and half sovereigns (Shields, Young Vics and special years only) as figured they’d be the easiest to move on if/when necessary. Am thinking about picking up generic year Sovs at some point so I have an ‘easy stack’ to sell first when the time comes though. Recently moved into proof graded special years also as I’d like something to hold/collect just for myself. Whether I’ve got it right/wrong I guess time will tell - as always though, still feels something of a privilege to be having these discussions 👍🏼
