Wileyfox got a reaction from HonestMoneyGoldSilver in Silver - Bullion Kruggerands - £23.75/oz
    Hi all,
    I have for sale 20 15 x 1oz silver bullion coins
£23.75/oz + post at cost and risk of buyer

£356 posted SD if taking the remaining 15 oz.

    Coins are:
    2x 2022 Brits
    3 x 2021 Krugerrands
    15 12 x 2022 Krugerrands
Coins are sold as bullion. Add capsules for 25p each.
These coins are sold as bullion so expect some minor imperfections/milk spotting - close up shows most impaired coins, the others are in better condition.
    Thanks for looking.

Wileyfox got a reaction from katyc in List of capital gains tax free PM's?
UK legal tender is CGT exempt - the concept is that you can't make a chargeable gain when disposing of (exchanging) pound sterling with pound sterling (GBP).
To put it most simply - Does it have GBP face value? If yes, then CGT exempt, if no then not exempt.
As sovereigns have a face value of £1 pound sterling they are exempt - this also includes the branch mint ones Sydney, Melbourne etc.
Britannias, Queen's Beasts - yes CGT exempt as they have pound sterling face value.
Bars - no exemption, I can't think of any bar that has a pound sterling face value.
Offshore - depends - from some research on Wikipedia it seems that Channel Islands, Tristan de Cunha etc. use a local version of pound sterling and so are exempt, Isle of Man and Gibraltar have legally separate currencies that are pegged at par with pound sterling and so would not be exempt.
This link from Chards also has some useful info

Hi everyone!  I'm Nuno Elias, from Lisbon in Portugal!   Thanks for having me!

A couple of months ago I started digging into precious metals (pun intended). And then, out of curiosity, I did my first investment in a 1 kilo silver bar, which I bought on a second-hand market. I have a lack of words to describe how intrigued (yet very excited) I was to be holding onto a such a nice piece of pure silver.

So I decided I wanted to learn more about silver, how to invest and collect it.  And shortly after a couple of hours researching online,  I found out about the Silver Forum.
I'm still learning the ropes about silver, but hopefully some day I can contribute to this forum and to the community.

Thank you, and wish you all a great weekend!

    Cheers,
    Nuno

    They were demonetised in 1891.
    Referenced on Wikipedia:
"The Coinage Act 1889 also authorised the Bank of England to redeem worn gold coins from before Victoria's reign, but on 22 November 1890 all gold coins from before her reign were called in by Royal Proclamation and demonetised effective 28 February 1891."

I was browsing this morning for some info on another area of British coinage and accidentally stumbled upon this article. It's a bit of a gem and I'd thought I'd share it with any of you who care about the history and use behind sovereigns and half sovereigns. I personally love these academic articles where a contemporary has gone to some trouble to inspect and analyse the currency they found.
Part 2 onwards is fascinating - the quantity by date of sovereigns and halves which were to be found in change from 1817-1867 issues - some are scarcely found. There's a surprising amount of 1841s found - predictably very few of 1819.
1864 make up over a fifth of sovereigns in circulation in 1868!
Also of interest into part 3 and 4 of the article are the percentages found circulating below legal tender weight.
Pg 440 is particularly fascinating. It gives some idea to survival rates in 1868. Bear in mind that many more coins will have been melted since. Perhaps worth comparing with Marsh - to see how they marry up.

Thanks, no I'm not looking to get it at spot jus the prices on websites is the cost of it plus vat but if someone selling one that they bought at a lower price like when it was much cheaper then they are still making profit selling it.
Thanks handy considered that, I'll look into it 👍

@Jayjay You can buy pre-owned but as a buyer myself from time to time, I expect to have a sizeable chunk of the VAT built in in the prices I pay. Someone has paid it haven’t they ? Why should that not be reflected in the price. In my view it ought to be.
by implication are you looking for Rhodium at spot?  It’s valuable & I am one of the few here who collects it, but it’s never leaving my collection for spot.
good luck w search & I am also trying to source additional Pd at the moment

Don't forget that Platinum used to be higher priced than gold.
Why it is well below gold I don't know because Pt is rarer and more expensive to mine.
In jewellery it was historically seen as more precious than gold.
Some will say the price fell due to low industrial demand but what would happen if overnight the hydrogen market took off, fuel cells took off, water purification took off, maybe Elon Musk shows interest .... ???
Just maybe however gold is too high and at some point will collapse - who knows ?

I am holding onto my Pt as making a small profit now isn't really of any interest.
I sold most of my gold a while back and now wish I hadn't as it has risen a lot since.
Same could happen with Pt so unless you require the cash I would hold.
