Is silver shorted because it's an easy way to make money?
Just how profitable has shorting silver been? is there any way to know
If you could control a market and print money from it without anyone really objecting (industrial use certainly don't mind low prices) - I can understand why that would happen
Or is there actually a grander conspiracy behind it
Is it that if gold and silver were allowed to attempt to find fair value they would be like a black hole for currency and inflate exponentially, Is that what we're seeing in crypto now

Well stated. Just about everything really is a lie. The truth never needs laws to protect it. The minute you find legislation protecting a thought or idea run away. It's protecting some bollocks.

Nobody has mentioned a big winner from all the UK dealers "selling out" of silver....the VAT man. A cool 20% on every purchase from this weekends hype and talk....
    Taxman always wins 😉
I feel sorry for the people that didn't know better and are sitting on £33/Oz Britannia when the look at the buy back prices tomorrow

Dealers have ulterior motives, they don't want to sell you silver today at $25/oz when tomorrow they can sell at $30 and also they want hysteria so saying there is a shortage plays into their hands. Don't trust dealers.
I bet there had been a spike in demand, but the hysteria plays into their hands.
Also, they will have to restock and they don't want to sell at $25 tonight and then call their supplier tomorrow morning to be charged $35 to get new stock.

In the "out of hours" market on Bullionvault (vaulted physical metals)
The dollar $ price for silver is currently $2+ from what spot was on when it closed out Saturday
What is there to expect when Asian markets open later??

So, I do not think we will see astronomical silver prices any time soon.
First of all the GME situation is not resolved and "they" (the WSB'ers) will still be going on this before anything else.
I personally do not think the infinite squeeze will come from GME so a lot of people will lose a lot of money and then not have any to push up silver too.
    Just my opinions.
As for the dealers that are saying they are swamped, never take that on face value because it is in their interest to say they are swamped and create hysteria.
This whole subject is about market manipulation and dealers/big YouTube channels with affiliate links to silver sellers will be pumping and pumping to their hearts content.
What I honestly think will happen is silver will get to $30 this week, premiums on physical will increase massively too. Nothing more than we saw earlier last year.
But, If it does go to $1000/oz then I will, of course be a very happy bunny indeed!

Sure, I have as little insight into this as anyone else.
Having been aware of the WSB and GME fun and games, ZeroHedge or Seeking Alpha mentioned that the Reddit crowd might look at silver next. Sure enough silver did pop up by between £1 and £1.50; and the Gold:Silver ratio dipped below 70:1 to 68.3.
It will be tremendously entertaining if these guys do crowd into silver, and do a Bunker Hunt.
We have not seen any sales spikes in silver, and I remain quite happy about that, as transport and deliveries are still problematic, due to both Covid and Brexit. Freight rates are still high, you may have seen reports about them being up by a factor of about 8. If we get huge sales spikes, we should be able to consolidate shipments, keeping unit shipping costs low, but on the other hand, it sounds like most mints are having transport and supply problems with blanks. This may cause greater backlogs, which we don't like, but have to deal with.
If the conspiracy theorists seize on mint supply and delay problems, they may concude that demand is higher than it actually is, or that silver as a commodity is in short supply, creating publicity to that effect, and start, drive, or feed hysteria for investors, speculators, and gamblers, to pile into silver.
As we sell silver bars and coins, we will be happy to try and service some of this demand, but we may get swamped if it turns into full-blown hysteria.
We will maintain a market, and our buying prices should not chnage much relative to intrinsic.
I think you are right that a silver play is unlikely to get as crazy as GME.
I don't go along with the conspiracy theories that silver is manipulated, at least not in a major way.
We will still be buying silver, but did I menton that I think platinum is too cheap, certainly when looking at the Gold:Platinum ratio, currently about 1.71 compared with typically about 1.0 for much of the past 40 years. Platinum price has been below gold since about 2001, and i think it is overdue to recover.

The alternative is to carry on investing in a system that is clearly rigged? This has reached far greater than "Reddit", this is the general public now.

Your scenario is probably inevitable at some point and is just waiting for the right catalyst. This could be it but I doubt it. Somehow the can will get kicked down the road again.

You have hit the nail on the head here, the bullion banks will be wiped out if the reddit guys etc succeed. The bullion banks will be shi-ting themselves as virtually all their short contracts are naked, absolutely insane behavior which has served them very well for years. Now may be the time of reckoning for them but they & their masters will fight back.
This week is going to be very interesting because I believe the FED & other governments will step into the possible s--t storm probably not openly but they will be there. They like business as usual (rigged game f--k the little guy).
Hold onto your hats lol & don't put in any money you can't afford to lose, buy as most people on here do physical or a few silver mining shares, UK have a  look at HOC & FRES.

We are a sorry, miserable, devastating unlucky bunch indeed on here indeed...at least we still have each other - it is a comforting feeling to know one is not alone in this rather unique but extremely sad situation
On a slightly brighter note, I now have a very energetic and adorable young springer spaniel for sale! He looks to have had some rather crude recent stomach surgery of indeterminate origin (and reason unknown). He will be a good companion to someone I am sure in a month or two, when whatever soporifics his present food supplies are contaminated with (another strange mystery) run out and he wakes up healed
