It was the ATH hit where there were a lot of stops set for the shorts, when the gold futures opened and the volume was low and the short stops got triggered it caused a big movement.

As a futures trader it’s fun to watch when it happens but that spike to all time highs was a hedge fund getting blown out on their short position. Gold closed on Friday at all time highs and got margin called over the weekend. You know it’s someone having to cover on market orders because equites and bond futures didn’t move at all. It will be back. This happened a lot in bonds when interest rates were marching to zero.
