Now I want to melt down some junk silver. Seems like it should be pretty easy. Can anyone recommend a good starter kit for such?

What could possibly go wrong.....😃

Cost of energy to melt it exceeding the value of the metal !!

If it is UK coinage, even back to 1816, you could be prosecuted!

Well quite Petra. I was thinking that maybe, just perhaps, I have fallen foul of a junk/scrap distinction I should have used. Full steam ahead I say let's crack this thing .....

At the end of the day, if you melt .925 silver, that is what you end up with (etc. other types). You will find that if you melt .999 and then some other, you will see a massive difference and just end up buying .999 shot (or similar).
